Honfleur without a car...what do you think?

We have been invited to a friend's wedding in Honfleur next year, me, DH and children aged 4 and 2. only problem is she has picked sat 15 July for the big day! so not only the day after a major public holiday but also changeover day for most gites and other accommodation.
DH is fanatically anti-car and wants to try to get there by train as far as possible. We could get quite a good ferry crossing Portsmouth-Le Havre overnight, but what happens after that?
So my questions mainly are:

  • can you realistically stay in self-catering accommodation in/near Honfleur without using a car? we could rent one for the odd day if we wanted to go somewhere in particular.
  • any tips or suggestions for accommodation, particularly if we try to go midweek to cover the Bastille day weekend. We might try to get a bigger place and share with another family, but it's not essential.
  • any other comments or suggestions welcome

Honfleur is a really lovely port, with lots of interesting bits to wander round, and a huge carousel by the port that my children loved! I would suggest that you rent a car to be collected in Le havre, and try and find accomodation in Honfleur (with parking). Driving is much easier in France, as there is far less traffic than here. Accomodation should be easy: try the local tourist office (via the net)first. Let me know how you go. Book early though, accomodation with english speaking hoteliers goes quickly. Self catering at that time of year will ber a pain, as it tends to go for 7 or 14 days: a small 'pension' or auberge should give you very reasonable b'n'b accomodation.
Good luck

Sorry this is a bit late but - we took boat from POrtsmouth to Le harve then look a taxi to Honfleur (about £25 - I think). We stayed in great hotel in a sort of 2 storied family room (2adults, 3 kids). Address www.antares-honfleur.com We walked into Honfleur - you might need a buggy for younger kids. Had a great time!
