Rome - with children

In a slightly mad moment I have booked Easyjet flights to Rome for 4 nights in the Oct half term. Children are DD1 - 11, DS1 - 8 and DD2 - 4 - can anyone reassure me that we are going to have a fantastic time - I spent a great week in Rome aged 20 and am worried that over 20 yrs later what was easily walkable on my own will be a nightmare with the children.

We will have three full days - what would you recommend seeing/not bothering with.

Haven't booked the hotel yet - does anyone have any recommendations?

Will be fine. Get one of the hop on hop off double decker buses - easy to get around that way. I live in Rome and my 4 year old ds can easily walk around the main sites in the centre though without flagging though so dont worry. Use any of the online book in advance things you can for the Colosseum, Vatican etc as queues can be a mare! If they want a break from the sightseeing then spend an afternoon in Villa Borghese park. You can hire bikes and its lovely (and central - just above Spanish steps and Piazza del Popolo).
Re hotels I would go for a b&b rather than a hotel as think with space being at a premium here you get more for your money.
Re what to see-def the Colosseum, the piazzas in the centre -Navona, Rotonda (Pantheon) etc and the Vatican. My 4 year old went with me with my parents to here the other week and loved it- think he found going down the 3 levels and discovering a new building very exciting!

You will have a brilliant time. I took my 3 when they were 7,5 and 15 weeks. Many said we were mad to take hem when they were so young but Rome is really easy to manage on foot. We stayed a minutes walk from the Trevi fountain, I think it was called the Accademia which was pretty central. Have been back to Rome since and we all still loved it. Have fun

We spent 4 nights there at beginning of Easter hols, with Dss of 7(just) and 9. Was great. They most like all the Roman stuff, I couldn't get them to get v excited about paintings but they liked:

All the fountains
Animal Statues and columns and obelisks
Ice creams everywhere - San Crispino especially it was divine
The midday cannon from the top of one of the hills above Trastevere - take a picnic lunch up, eat after the cannon, walk down to Trastevere.

The park at Villa Borghese has bikes and surreys to hire, which is also fun.
The Bocca de Veritas

We pre- booked a great tour at the colosseum which takes you under the stage where they kept the animals and the bodies. You can only pre-book. Use the tickitaly website.

You will have a fab time. Try not to do too much. We used a book on travelling to Rome with kids which I found on amazon to get ideas.
