What did you like best and what didnt you like?!

OP posts:
rockinhippy · 12/05/2011 14:33

Expected to hate it & went for DDs sake - LOVEd it

Highs - Mini world, Haunted Mansion, Birthday meal in the Sleeping Beauty Castle, Pirates of the Caribean, Hotel Food, & lots lots more :)

Lows -
been p'd around by the Disney booking people (we booked direct with DLP) lost our tickets & p'd around sorting it all out - extra stressful as we needed them for DDs friends visaHmm,
Closed the pool down in our original hotel, which was a main reason for choosing said hotel - but didn't tell usAngry I only found out by a fluke, but when trying to get them to sort it out, upgrade they were bloody unhelpfulAngry did in the end but I had to create a real stink over it.

I had taken a sholley (walker/shopping trolley) as I can have walking problems & can't carry anything - we were told this was okay - staff/security in the actual parks didn't like it at all, great with wheelchair users, but not with any walking disabled - I did manage to sort it out as I speak French, but that was the only reason they gave in - found myself having the same debate in French every time we went into a park - which was spoiling things - so in the end I gave up & left it at the hotel, I did manage, but it was a lot harder than it needed to be & put me in bed for a week when I got home.

DLP booking messing up DDs birthday meal & booking her in for Tea with Mickey & friends - she was NOT impressed :( & spent her birthday treat in tears - bit of a let down all round, she considered herself too old for this - but Mickey himself didn't even show up - winnie the pooh etc instead Confused - we were given the impression you needed to book in advance - we managed to book the correct Princess meal ourselves without trouble - which cheered her up no end - if not our wallets - but the food & atmosphere on this was AMAZING & they really spoilt her & her friend because of the mix up :)

Lot of BIG pot holes around the place - not great with little ones running around - DD went flying several times & anyone with poor vision/walking it was accident waiting to happen - saw a lot of falls.

The hotel TV channel advertising rides as suitable for little ones - when they weren't - we got caught out on one roller coaster type thing (clondyke?), which had hidden sharp drops into dark holes that had both 6 yr old DCs in absolute terror, they shook & cried for an hour afterwards & DD likes to push herself & doesn't scare easily :( - we queued for another that we had been assured was fine & DCs had seen on TV - only to see others coming out in hysterics & on asking those getting off were told don't do it

But all in all most of the problems were caused by the booking arm of DLP & we did have a fantastic time - even me & I HATE stuff like that :)

Highs

Breakfast with characters
Journey is quite short

Lows

Cold
Rain
People didn't seem to understand queues
Staff were rude
Staff smoking outside rides

I would save for a few years and go to Disneyworld it is soooooo much better
I love disneyworld but I would never go back to DLP it sucked.

toughdecisions · 12/05/2011 15:04

Liking VoteAV's layout

Highs

Breakfast with characters
The shows - don't miss them only 20-30 mins long (& great to sit down)
Parades
DS aged 5 loved Buzz Lightyear ride & the rest
If DC not toddlers the stunt car show

Lows
Lack of places to just sit & people watch
Food & food prices
Not many rides in Hollywood studios for kids under 7

Best of all bought 3 day tickets at gates & were told could upgrade to annual pass for only 1 euro - so did go back 11 1/2months later Smile

VoteAV · 12/05/2011 18:07

Remembered another high

The pony rides at the cowboy hotel.

and a bump for you

MollyMurphy · 12/05/2011 18:25

It was fun all in all - not as big as the one in Florida but many things were surprisingly similar to my recollections. There were some techniqual difficulties when we were there and the park opening hours were difficult too as I recall closing disappointingly early.

We like the haunted mansion and the pirate ride the best. My husband had never been to any Disneyland and it was a total joy to see how much fun he had - we must have gone on that pirate one about 5 times.

I hated the space mountain ride - it was MUCH scarier than the one I went on in Florida going on 15 years ago. My head was flying around hitting my seat so hard I felt like I'd been beat up by the time we got off. My husband almost lost his glasses - so just be forewarned.

We used the fast pass system which is a must have IMO. Even with it we never made it onto the Thunder Mountain Railroad. Which (unless that one's changed too) was a hoot at the one in Florida.

We loved the classic Disney rides - Snow White, Peter Pan, Mr Toads Wild Ride, Pinnochio....good family rides - not terrifying but still fun for everyone.

I would go again if we were in the area and had time. Its good to get there early and have an idea of your priorities for the day as there is lots to do.

They didn't have a light parade which I was sorry about but its been a long time maybe none of them do that anymore...?

MollyMurphy · 12/05/2011 18:32

Oh here is a bullet of my top and worst 5:

Top 5
-Pirate Ride
-Haunted Mansion
-Peter Pan
-Its a small world
-Petty Park in General - Nice Castle

Worst 5
-technical difficulties were a big problem when we were there
-The line in the am was like a free for all - needs better organization
-Space Mountain - painful and scary
-Food prices and quality
-The opening hours when we were there were too short

Aimsmum · 12/05/2011 18:33

Highs

Seeing DD's face when we first entered disneyland and how excited she was by it all.
Parade
Small world ride
Pirates of the Caribbean

Lows

Really rude people
Someone stealing a map straight out of my back pocket
Food and the price of it
Having to sharpen elbows and put your manners to one side to be able to get on a bus between hotel and park.

Depending on the age of your kids I would agree that saving for a bit and going to Florida would be so much better. I have been to Disney Paris 3 times and always enjoyed it, but went to Florida last summer and have to say, honestly, it is a million times better.

AngryFeet · 12/05/2011 18:43

Highs

Any of the parades but the one at night (can't remember name) is amazing
Cafe Mickey (best food there - not that that is saying much!)
The water feature thing outside Hotel New York where we stayed (my childrens favourite part of the whole trip was running around this)
DH liked the balloon ride thing in the village
Tower of Terror - not for young kids but it is bloody brilliant

Lows

It is just very small which I found disappointing - it does not have the grandeur of Florida
Food is generally rubbish and is very expensive
My DD was terrified of all the rides and characters!
Staff are very rude

I enjoyed the first time we went but the second time I just thought meh. It is ok but not really that amazing. I will be taking my two to Orlando next time we want to do Disney - yes it costs more but only because you need to go for longer. If you broke it down I reckon DLP is more expensive!

AngryFeet · 12/05/2011 18:45

They do still have the light parade molly but it is at night only in the summer school hols I think. We saw it last August.

chrisrobin · 12/05/2011 18:58

We went over Easter this year and my DCs loved it

Highs
Playland
The staff walking around in costume were great with the DCs
The parades
Playhouse Disney live
Stitch live

Lows
The food was rubbish and very expensive even in the cheap restaurants
The security checks- every bag searched and x-rayed- I know they have to do it but there weren't enough staff on and it took ages
The castle has hoardings around it as there is work going on (again, can't be helped)
Some of the rides were very short
The toilets were vile

purplearmadillo · 12/05/2011 19:06

We went over easter and my children loved it (6 and 3).

Highs:
1 cafe mickey - expensive and food average but really good personal access to all the main characters (Mickey, Minnie, Goofey, Pluto, Stitch, Baloo, Timon (Lion King). My DC were beside themselves with joy, and it was a real high point.
2 Buzz Lightyear ride, even cynical DH loved it and we went on it loads and loads
3 Early magic hour - if you are staying in a disney hotel, definitely do this and then have breakfast afterwards, it was the best time to do stuff
4 Eurostar - made the whole thing so easy
5 Children loved dumbo/its a small world/peter pan

Lows:

  1. Food in general very average.
  2. The car ride in fantasyland - can't remember what it called - autopia? Getting the car to go straight was a nightmare, it kept slamming into the sides and I really hated it (ok, perhaps I am just a crap driver).

Can't think of any other bad bits really. We had a great time. We were lucky with good weather and all the staff we came across were great. It is definitely worth doing some research in advance and booking restaurants etc, I found that made like easier.

VoteAV · 12/05/2011 19:11

Also, if you have a child with SN (like us) Florida is much much better. They went out of their way to make my child happy and help in every way. It really made our holiday, everyone was so utterly lovely to her and when we arrived they had set up all sorts of treats for her. This continued throughout the time we were there. It actually felt like they cared and not that they did it because it was their job. I can honestly say going there is one of my happiest memories and our dd still talks about it every day. It was over four years ago now.

Aimsmum · 12/05/2011 19:11

Haha, I went on the autopia ride in Orlando with my friend's 4 yr old, I was doing the same thing, bashing into the sides, couldn't get it to go straight, gave the wheel to the 4 year old and we started going perfectly! Grin

VoteAV · 12/05/2011 19:15

The electrical parade for those who loved it :

peeriebear · 12/05/2011 19:40

We went seven years ago now and I still want to go back!
Good points:
We went in march as it was cheap and it SNOWED, just enough for an icing sugar sprinkle, I have rarely felt like such a big grinning kid.
Eurostar/TGV were a pleasure and very efficient
Whole atmosphere was very magical when walking around, kids were beside themselves
Lovely reasonably priced things in the gift shops including sale items (I still use my Mickey whisk and DD1 still sleeps with her velvety soft Simba cub!)
Shuttle bus from hotel was regular and efficient
Lovely hot chocolate to fend off the bitter March cold
There were ducks roaming around
The castle has trees trimmed into neat cube shapes which really tickled me.
Bad points:
Room was tiny for 2 adults and two kids! It was the second cheapest hotel (Cheyenne) but come on, with the money people splash out there they could have given more than a shoebox.
Food was beyond average. No vegetarian food whatsoever in the shops (this is 7 years ago). In despair I bought a cheese, ham and pickle baguette to take the ham out. The pickle was A pickle, one solitary cornichon about an inch long.
Found it quite hard to work out which characters would be appearing where and when, but that may have just been me :)
A lot of the attractions were closed, they are all closed on rotation for maintenance but there seemed to be a lot closed. When we were there the jungle pizza place, the Pizza Planet, the Pirates of the caribbean and it's a small world were all closed :(

avaj · 12/05/2011 20:05

Would never have been somewhere I really wanted to go, but went at Easter with kids and loved it!

Highs
Buzz Lightyear Ride
Character meal at Lucky Nugget - kids were sooo excited!
Small world ride - relaxing and cute
The fact that you can walk everywhere - not massive like Florida
Playhouse disney puppet show - great for wee ones

Lows
Pushy French parents trying to get kids to meet characters
Food prices

Figgygirl · 13/05/2011 05:45

Hi,
It's a bit difficult for me to give 5 highs and lows really, as I have been going there regularly since it opened, so for 19 years. My boys grew up going there once or twice a year ( also WDW five times ) and both went there for their 18th birthdays.
Everything is a high for me once I arrive, until the moment I leave.
Just two things that I don't like that have got worse over the last few years since they made staff cutbacks following the recession -
The number of European guests mainly of one particular Nationality smoking around the parks instead of using the designated areas, and ignoring the CMs when told to stop.
Mostly the same Nationality refusing to queue to meet Characters, and pushing their kids forward, and others out of the way.
It is pointless to try to compare DLP with WDW - they are nothing like each other - that is why it is called Walt Disney WORLD, because of the sheer size.
We took our boys there for the first time when they were 9 and 13, and that was about right. They could both cope with 2 weeks of theme parks and waterparks in the heat and humidity, and we could go on most rides together as a family as DS2 just made the height apart from some rollercoasters.
DLP is lovely for a short trip from the UK, with a direct Eurostar train straight into resort from London, Ashford or Ebbsfleet in 2 1/2 hrs or less. Or a relatively short flight ( one hour for us ).
The French do not know how to cook fast food, but the buffets and table service restaurants are very good, and some are excellent.
If you book a 2/3/4/ night package when the 40% off plus kids under 12 stay, play and travel free offer is on, it is nothing like the cost of a holiday in Florida.
Americans envy the deals that DLP offer as they don't get anything like it in the American resorts.
Don't buy park tickets at the gates - you can get them for ? 30 online if you are not staying in a Disney hotel. Breakfast and park tickets are included in DLP resort hotels - unlike in WDW.
Do the research, find out what is there, and decide for yourself if your family will enjoy it.
A lot of refurb is going on this year ready for next years 20th Anniversary celebrations - that is why the castle is being completely repainted, along with other attractions and all the Disney hotels.
There is a forum for Disneyland Paris on Trip Advisor, also under Marne La Vallee. Also see previous threads on Mumsnet about DLP where I have answered questions and given links.

VoteAV · 13/05/2011 10:33

So OP have you decided to go for it ?

gregssausageroll · 13/05/2011 13:55

Honestly?

We had a good time when we went which was 5 years ago. Would I go back - no. I thought the place was poorly run, tired, food was awful, smoking horrendous, people were dreadful and it is very, very expensive.

On the plus, we went in January and the place was fairly quiet.

rockinhippy · 13/05/2011 15:31

I'm finding this quite interesting - we went in term time & generally found the staff etc very good & helpful - we were heading back on the Saturday & I noticed a MASSIVE influx of people then & it did get very manic, so I can imagine staff getting pretty stressed by it & generally people were quite rude & pushy for our last few hours.

but generally bar the security guys being over cautious with my trolley, but again that was down to the booking arm not telling me to take a Drs letter, I couldn't really fault them -

Can't comment on the junk food, we don't usually eat it, so I wouldn't know good from bad, it filled a hole & I didn't find it that bad price wise either, Confused

did everyone else go in School holiday time??

dontdillydally · 13/05/2011 22:20

Im thinking legoland sounds better!

OP posts:
Figgygirl · 13/05/2011 23:53

My favourite times are summer holidays, because although it can be very busy, the main park rides to not close until 11pm ( line entry time ) and I love the electrical parade ( currently Fantillusion ) and the fireworks every night. You do not get this at other times, apart from special dates like Bastille Day and New Years Eve etc. With EMH from 8am and leaving the park around midnight usually, this gives us 16 hours in the park.

When my boys were younger we usually went back to our hotel after lunch to have a swim and relax by the pool until maybe 5pm, then go back into the park for the evening - the Newport Bay Club hotel has the best pools we think. At present, the Disney hotels pools do not open until 3pm, apart from the DLH, so that is a sign of the cutbacks as well.

Now my boys are adult, we like having a day in Paris, which takes 40 mins on the RER line A4 train to Chatelet Les Halles, or a bit longer to CDG Etoile.

We also like going in the beginning of December for low crowds but with all the lovely Christmas decorations and extra events. Fantillusion is on at this time, and also an extra Dreams Of Christmas parade, but no fireworks ( apart from NYE ). The Castle looks amazing when it lights up with dazzling white sparkling lights after the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at 6pm. We like staying in the Sequoia Lodge at this time of year, with the wood/ stone theming and open fire in the lounge.

When my boys were younger, they just wanted to keep on the go and eat fast food when they were hungry, but now we only eat in the buffets or table service restos in the parks, Village or hotels. I think that an all you can eat buffet with loads of choices of starters, mains, desserts, cheeses etc is better value for money than bland fast food which does not really fill you up so you need to buy more later - so in the long run it costs more than the buffet.

January - March ( excluding half term and Easter ) is the cheapest time to go, and usually has good offers like 40% off, free nts / days, kids under 12 free, and sometimes Free Dining, but also when more rides may be closed for maintenance and refurb, and fewer shows and parades, so you don't get an idea of what it is like at other times of the year. I think it lacks atmosphere when it is very quiet, although obviously queue lines are shorter or non existent.

We have visited many various theme parks in this country and abroad, and DLP is no more expensive food wise, apart from America where the cost of everything is cheaper anyway, so cannot be compared with Europe. On our first 3 trips to WDW, staying in the Disney All Stars Movies hotel, our Disney park tickets were included in our package, as they are in DLP, but now you have to buy them separately. By the time you have paid for flights, hotel Disney tickets, tickets for the water parks and other theme parks in Orlando, maybe Busch Gardens in Tampa, Space Centre, money for food, drink and shopping, it is a very expensive holiday, and not possible for some people.
DLP gives them the opportunity to take their kids to Disneyland for a few days when they would otherwise not go at all.
There are also some good rides/ attractions that they do not have in the American parks, and some like BTM, Small World and POTC are better in DLP IMO. The Castle is DLP ( Sleeping Beauty's ) is considered the prettiest one of all the Disney parks.

Figgygirl · 14/05/2011 00:05

Local people buy Francilien Annual Passports, and many visit the parks every weekend all year round, so much busier than weekdays in school time. You will see them pouring in from the car parks and railway station.
School holidays are obviously busy, but different weeks in summer can vary depending on when French people go away for their holidays. The weather will also affect crowd levels.
French schools have either half day or full day holiday on Wednesday in term time so this day can be more busy.
Avoid any Public Holiday dates in France or Spain.
