Staying at Caledonian Hilton, Edinburgh for 3 nights

Anyone stayed there before? I'm going with a friend. She's always wanted to see the castle at night and secretly I've booked a castle view room

So far I've booked a Ghost tour and tickets for the Stand - comedy club. We'll come back shattered but it's worth it.

We went there for new years eve a couple of years ago, I was pregnant with a cold and the hotel had no hot water/central heating - in Dec I kid you not. So my personaly experience wasnt great. If you get a chance, there is a restaurant called the Witchery, great atmosphere, great food but not particulary cheap.

I got engaged there. But presumably you won't be needingto arrange for champagne on ice and a bunch of roses on the bed.
Can't really help on what to do - we only managed one bracing walk up to Calton hill. Room service is good though.

I've stayed there - got a free weekend there so was all fantastic for me! Got a lttle alarmed at the man who parks your car and carries your bags - only had a little Renault 5 and a £7 Miss Selfridge dress hanging up. It was the Scottish Labour Party Conference when I stayed - got leered at by George Galloway and a bit star struck when the lift opened to John Prescott.

There's a really lovely fish/wine bar just over the road. Can't think of the name, pretty much directly opposite and slightly up a side street, down in a cellar, - old bank building I think. Have a wonderful time, I'm jealous. We love Edinburgh. We had our (very short)honeymoon at The George. Have stayed in the North British - other end of Princes Street with big clock - and that was TERRIBLE. Royal Yacht and that area is worth seeing. Botanical gardens lovely. Shops are fab. Are you child free? Enjoy.

The ghost tour will be good - but you have to be prepared to enter into the 'spirit' of it all!! .
If you and your friend like shellfish there is a great place called the Mussel Inn on Rose street which is just fab!

Thanks for your input all Hope the central heating problem was a one of jenkel, if not they'll be giving me a big dissy!

Oh, I'm so excited. My mate will pop when she sees the hotel. She hasn't been to Edinburgh before - except to the zoo for some reason - so will be blown away by the place.

Edinburgh is my favourite city so I can't wait. Looking forward to the ghost tour and thanks for the restaurant recommendations.

We're child free so can do whatever we want!

Blue Bar Cafe, which is above the Traverse, is very good. A bit noisy, but handy for your hotel and not bad prices

Ulysees · 07/11/2005 23:21

cheers, tamum. Noisy is good

You sound a great friend yULeYSEES. The Caledonian is a great hotle - fantastic location. Have to admit it's a long time since I stayed there (a freebie through my dh - we were being taken to the Edinburgh Tatoo).

The ice rink wil be up in Prices Square too. And Edinburgh will look lovely with all the pretty white Christmas lights.

Personally, I prefer Glasgow, but as a Weegie, I would say that, wouldn't I! - (but Edinburgh is nice to visit - and then to go hom to get your tea! )

Prettybird · 15/11/2005 16:01

Oops - meant to say Princes Street Gardens, not Princes Square!
