good resorts half way to Australia

My SIL and her family live in Brisbane and we live in Harrogate, UK with year old twin boys. We have met up once before for a holiday in Phuket, Thailand when she had one daughter and we were childless (to save on the expense and hassle of one set of us going all the way to Australia or vice versa).

We would like to do the same again next year but she now has a 4 year old and a 2 year old and we have the DTs. Does anyone have any good recommendations of family friendly resorts in the Far East/Indian Ocean/Sri Lanka etc where we could meet up next year?

How about Malaysia (Langawi or Penang perhaps) or Bali?

I'm not into the middle east, but if you can tolerate it then possibly Dubai???

fluffykitten · 06/11/2005 18:08

maldives

fluffykitten · 06/11/2005 18:09

or go the other way round and USA or canada

dejags · 06/11/2005 18:55

Maldives is a fantastic destination but quite pricy. How about Cape Town?

dejags · 06/11/2005 18:56

direct overnight flight from the UK (11hours) and you can fly direct from Perth to CT.

Sri Lanka is fab. What are you after? Beach or mountains?

eidsvold · 06/11/2005 20:16

Singapore is fab... what about here

Lots of good deals for singapore often here in Aus.

I know it isn't far east but our dd loved it when we had a stop over in Singapore on our way out to Brisbane.

eidsvold · 06/11/2005 20:17

that would be about a 13 hour flight for you and from memory eight hours for them.

harrogatemum · 07/11/2005 14:13

oooh thanks ladies - quite fancy Sri Lanka as it seems about half way for both of us - who has been and where did you stay and was it child friendly....?????

SL is brilliant.
Do a search under my name in the archives.
I've bored half of MN senseless about it.

harrogatemum · 07/11/2005 14:27

Travel obviously.
Look in main text for key words SL as even if people don't ask about SL,I tend to tell them.

I always read a Lonely Planet cover to cover before I go anywhere as well.

harrogatemum · 07/11/2005 19:46

have been looking through some of your archived posts moondog - think I've learnt quite a lot about you as well as SL!!! Whereabouts in Russia did you live? I studied it at uni and spent 3 months studying at Moscow Uni - aaaggghhh what an experience, too many stories to recount, I try to blot it out of my memory as much as poss. And have just been on hols to a workign organic farm in Llithfaen, seems to be your neck of the woods!!

How intersting hg? When?
We were in Nizhny Novgorod and Moscow.

I think I know about that place in Llithfaen (about 25 mins from me!) ABreton friend of mine (Welsh speaker)came to stay with me after being therewith his friend who works there. Ex physion I think and learning Welsh. Also bakes bread. Can't remember his name...
Maybe you know him...??

harrogatemum · 07/11/2005 20:19

hey moondog - not been to Nizhny Novgorod but saw that you had spent time on the Black Sea - I spent an interesting few days in Yalta having got there by train from Moscow in what was termed a 5 star hotel but that served what can only be described as dog food in the restaurant - have to say though that it was 1993 so things may have changed!! Re the organic farm - the manager was called Craig and was a really nice guy - it was a great place to go as it was really very Welsh speaking - a guy came to read the meter at the cottage we were staying in and I opened the door to him - he said something incomprehensible to me (except it seemed to have the word "meter" in it) then realised I wasnt Welsh and said he had come to read the meter. It was quite fascinating as having learned languages all my life Welsh is nothing like anything I know (French, GErman, Russian, Romanian) From your old posts (I am not stalking you by the way so dont get scared....ha ha) sounds like you live (d) in Caernarfon, we went there and had a good look round, infact parked up just near to the walls where those lovely colourful Georgian houses are!

Ah that's it! Craig!!!I remember now.

We loved the Black Sea. I can really see it taking off as a major international destination soon.
We were in Antalya on holiday this wekk-surrounded by Russians. It was like old times.

What an interesting person you sound! Do you use your languages?
Are you in Harrogate now??

Just sold our house in Caernarfon last week-thank God.

janeybops · 07/11/2005 20:54

Malaysia is very nice

moondog · 07/11/2005 21:04

Ooh yes janey.I've banged on about that too. (Liked it better than Thailand.)

harrogatemum · 08/11/2005 12:54

hey moondog - yes I am interesting(ha ha)-dont use my languages at all - I run a Customer Service department and all our customers are in the UK so there is no call for them. Its a shame really as it means I have lost a lot of the skills I had. How funny that your friend knows Craig - they were great cottages by the way! And yes I am still in Harrogate - but my plan is to escape to Australia as soon as i can persuade my husband that he watns to go home.
