If you could go anywhere in the world.....

where would you go? It's DH's 40th next year, and his MIL has offered him (us!) a holiday as his pressie. We have decided not to take the DCs and go in March next year. Have absolutely no idea where to go, but know I don't want to go for more than about 5 nights. We would prefer somewhere a bit different, and long haul doesn't bother us, even if only for a few days. It's a lovely dilemma, but don't know where to start......any suggestions....?

Cambodia.
Ankor Wat and then a couple of nights on the coast.
If you're into Theme Parks then a night in Singapore at Universal.

Can I come?

San Francisco

Well my perfect trip would be an American road trip or a trip to the far east. But given that you've said maximum 5 nights I'd say a city break. New York, Rome, Venice, Barcelona. If you are keen on great hotels and good weather but nothing much else there is Dubai, ok for 5 nights.

Oman, lovely country, lovely climate, lovely people.
I've been to Angkor and, while it is certainly spectacular, unless you are interested in Khmer art and culture I think you'd get a bit bored.

italy if it was just for 5 days and no kids.
that or a cabin in the highlands :)

For 5 days and no kids I would go to New York. Shopping/sight seeing/bars and restaurants. Actually for better weather - Barcelona or Seville.

Portoeufino · 26/04/2011 10:50

Or maybe the Amalfi coast in Italy.

Petra in Jordan. The most amazing place I have ever visited, definitely a true "experience" and not too far so could be done for 5 nights. Perhaps throw in a desert trip and a trip to the dead sea.
I would love NY but not with dh - he would rather just go off paragliding somewhere.

ilovefatbrian · 26/04/2011 17:14

ooooh, some great ideas. DH fancied NY, but we have both been before, so was thinking somewhere neither of us had been before..... I like the sound of Petra, that would never have crossed my mind. although someone told me they're not too keen on the Brits there though....?! I am off to google it! Sme other great ideas too...amalfi coast sounds lovely and hadn't thought about Oman. any other suggestions would be fab!

I wouldn't go to either New York or the Amalfi coast in March - too cold. In fact, Europe is too cold and unpredictable in March so unless you just want to hole up in a hotel and maybe hit a few indoor attractions I'd head south.

Miami would be fun for five days, or Egypt, Jordan, Caribbean, Cape Town? The latter is a long flight, but the same time zone as the UK (or maybe one hour difference), so no jet lag.

strandednomore · 26/04/2011 18:52

ilovefatbrian - I'm not sure if things have changed since I was there (1999) but the Jordanians were lovely, I certainly wouldn't have said there was any antagonism towards me as a Brit. I went as a young(ish) woman travelling on my own and never felt in any danger - I wondered around Amman on my own at night and travelled in local transport (busses, taxi's etc).

Sri Lanka would be my choice at the moment. Was just looking at photos last night. Amazing place. But for 5 nights I wouldn't bother.

Corsica and Sardinia lush places i'd go back to anyday.
