Venice or Seville?

If you had the option of three (yes, three!) child-free days with your DH, which of these places would you go to? In July - I've heard that Seville is very hot and that Venice is very expensive.

I can't choose...

Hmmm, have been to both and I would probably go for Seville. Tapas, courtyards, bodegas, fewer Americanss....

I was in Seville in July and it was HOT!! 38 degrees. Dh and I were only there for a day but I couldn't wait to get out of the place. And I usually love hot climates. Because it's inland there was no breeze at all and I actually found it difficult to walk any distance which is normally no problem to me. Now, possibly if you could siesta during the day and go out at night doing the tapas thing, like Porteufino says, it might be a lot nicer. Because we weren't actually staying there, there was nowhere to hang out and chill. Was in Venice around July years ago and loved it but there were lots of mosquitoes so if you decide on there bring insect repellent!

I have been to both, too.

They will both be extremely hot.

Seville has more shade, I think, and probably fewer tourists.

Save Venice for winter or early spring.

Guitargirl · 21/04/2011 00:58

Have also been to both and I would go for Seville every time. I stayed in Vincci La Rabida and can't recommend it highly enough.

I'd go for Seville in July. I went for 3 nights and spent 2 in Seville and 1 in Granada - it's an easy train journey and it's cooler there because it's high. And you can stay in the Alhambra Palace :o

Another saying Seville. Venice was heaving with people when we were there and the mosquitos are the biggest I've ever seen.

I don't think either Seville or Venice are great July destinations.

Antwerp or Amsterdam would be lovely in July.

Rosieeo · 21/04/2011 09:12

I thought Seville would be baking hot, but of course Venice will be too. Mozzies love me so Venice I'll save for another time!

To be honest, I did prefer Seville. The idea was that we got a hotel with air con and a pool (although the Vincci La Rabida looks fabulous!) and siesta/sunbathe in the afternoon. Or long lazy lunch in the shade. I don't mind heat as long as I'm not obliged to do anything but I had heard that it could get unbearable. The Granada option might be do-able as well.

Bonsoir, I know it's not ideal but it's the only time we can go due to work/childcare and all of that malarkey. I've been to Amsterdam a couple of times and did enjoy it. I've only passed through Antwerp but might price it up and give it some thought :)

Thanks everyone!

I'd go for Seville. I heard that Venice can also be a bit smelly in the summer. Seville WILL be roasting hot. Booking a hotel with a pool is a must!
Have you considered Portugal?

GnomeDePlume · 21/04/2011 10:54

I'm another Seville vote.

Venice completely passed me by. The great square with the 1920's reproduction tower. Huge expense and crap service. Possibly didnt help that I lived in the Netherlands so the canals werent a novelty!

ChristinedePizan · 21/04/2011 12:50

I love Venice but only ever go in autumn or winter - it's not too stinky then and there are less people.

ChristinedePizan · 21/04/2011 12:51

Less? Fewer Blush

Rosa · 21/04/2011 12:59

Venice doesn't smell in the summer ..its tidal when you get spring and autumn tides then the mud gets exposed at low tides then it smells!!!

Guitargirl · 21/04/2011 20:18

I went to Seville over the August bank holiday about 7-8 years ago. Believe me I HATE the heat but I found it very manageable. Almost balmy in fact.

Whereas Venice I hated with a passion and it was frigging roasting. Context is everything though. Seville I visited alone. Venice I went to with ex-boyfriend and his insane parents...

KenDoddsDadsDog · 21/04/2011 20:22

Seville every time! Beautiful place.

SaggyHairyArse · 21/04/2011 20:55

Seville!

Rosieeo · 22/04/2011 23:26

Right, I've decided! Seville it is; thank you very much everyone, booking tickets tomorrow.
