Hello everyone, I have a hankering to go to a christmas market! Don't know why, though I have suspicions that I'm having a fantasy christmas moment
Does anyone have any recommendations? I quite fancy strasbourg unless someone tells me any different?
Also, do you have any idea of where I can go and look for cheap flights?
Many thanks

Never been to Stasbourg at Christmas so not sure what the market is like but the town itself is beautiful and there is plenty to do.

Have a look on Eurostar too you may find that the prices are cheaper than flying. We found a 2 night break in Brussels with Eurostar and a 4 star hotel for £100 each, total bargain. They may even do a link that goes to Strasbourg.

For flights, try cheapflights.co.uk or expedia.co.uk I think they both have christmas market links on their websites.

Hope that helps.

Can you fly form Stansted? If so check out Ryanair to Graz in Austria, only 41pounds inc taxes for the first weekend in Dec. Graz is a lovely city. If Stansted is and option then just roll down the Ryanair list, suggestions include Salzburg or Bratislava (for Vienna).

Lincoln and York both have lovely Christmas Markets.

Haus, shall we have a mumsnet Christmas Market Meet-up then to cheer you up??
I went to one in Cottbus when I was working there years ago. It was raining and dreary, but it was very nice (apart from dreary umpah band who really looked as if they wished they were somewhere else. lol. they were wet through though)

how do you find out when the christmas markets are on?

MarsLady · 31/10/2005 20:22

There's one in Bath, so I've been told.

I'm going in early December with the DTs godmothers. Note I am not taking the DTs or the other children

gingerbear · 31/10/2005 21:40

Mars you will have a great time! (Not bee to Christmas market in Bath, but I loved the city when I visited)

ediemay · 31/10/2005 21:57

Vienna is lovely too. I found York very disappointing. Have a lovely time!

My BIL and SIL are going to Colone'd Xmas markets. Flying with German Wings and staying in the most amazing modern hotel that is so so reasonable.

housearrest · 01/11/2005 16:07

ja9 - I just did a search on google. There's tons of information out there. I'm ashamed to say that I didn't even think/know of the UK ones!

thanks again for all the info

Hausfrau-thanks so much for the tip. Food will definitely keep my DS happy (as well as my DH!).
My son now insists in walking everywhere so that's an issue in itself-but I'm looking forward to it. I'm going to surprise my hubbie with it so I'll either be posting on the divorce forum shortly after or I'll be letting you know how i got on. Thanks again everyone.

Been to Berlin and Budapest Christmas markets. Both were wonderful! Budapest also has the house that is an advent calendar - with a cake shop underneath. Both cold! Must try York that is a lot closer to home. There was a small one in Durham last year which was quite nice.

tiredemma · 02/11/2005 18:57

there is alovely one here in b.ham every year in front of the museum and council house.

hausfrau - yes, so agree about Germany and Christmas!

housearrest · 05/11/2005 15:46

Hi everyone, one last question I promise?its probably aimed at Hausfrau...does anyone know how easy/difficult it would be to get from Basel-Mulhouse airport to Strasbourg? It says on Easyjet's site that Basel is an hour away from Strasbourg but I'd really apperciate it if someone could let me know if its a journey worth doing with a 2yr old and a suitcase...!
Would a taxi be horrendously expensive would anyone know?

Thanks for any advice xx

Kedleston Hall in Derby, next Saturday 12th November, 10-4.

sis · 05/11/2005 16:28

There is one in holland that is held in caves with lots of christmas lights that I would love to go to - can't remember the name!

pineneedle · 06/11/2005 13:39

Anyone know if Lille is worth a daytrip on the Eurostar for the market?

pootlepod · 06/11/2005 14:21

I went to Lille last year just before Christmas. From memory the market is small but enjoyable, and I think there is an antiques fair too on Sunday. The normal shops are fantastic anyway- and the trip on the eurostar was easy which is why we did it. We went out 2nd class and came back first for the meal- think it was only something like a tenner more that way.
