Where would you go in august?

i need a cheap 1 week break in august, i can't cope with staying home for 6 weeks with 3 little ones, we are a family of 5 but little one is still under 2 if that helps. We want somewhere basic, hot and close to a beach and a short flight, not worried about kids clubs, and don't want to be near the drunks or loud brits abroad. I don't want to hire a car either. SO give me your suggestions of destinations please.

We are lucky enough to be able to have other holidays during the year, which is why this one needs to be super cheap, how cheap is realistic? and what countries should i be looking at? ideally i'd like to book through an agent, keep it all simple and easy, i'm guessing the later we leave it the better the prices but with 5 of us, will there be anything left? thankyou

Somthing like this in Poitou=Charentes?

TooTiredToArgue · 19/04/2011 18:41

Sorry, Miche8. Can I blatantly hijack?

portofino have you been to Poitou and would you recommend?

Portoeufino · 19/04/2011 22:57

No. First time. Tootired, you sound like you need advising. What are you looking for?

frenchfancy · 20/04/2011 07:29

Getting to the il d'Oleron could be a trick if you don't want to hire a car, once you are there you can cycle everywhere.

I prefer the il de Ré - which you can get a bus to from the airport, but it is very busy in August. Best tip i can give is to go the last week in August when most French holiday makers have gone home.

Hi Portoeufino thanks for replies

Yes, you're right. I do need advice! Basically have two DSs, one nearly 7, one 3. Would rather drive and take ferry than fly, but don't want a hideously long car journey in France.

2 years ago we went to a Siblu park in Brittany and it was fine, but I'd rather go somewhere where it's slightly hotter but not unbearably hot, iyswim. Need to be near beaches, pool, bike hire, things to do, but not somewhere incredibly busy and noisy. Sorry, all a bit vague, and obviously haven't done my homework re: driving distances/times in France Blush

Frenchfancy thanks for your reply. Would you recommend anywhere to stay in Ile de Re? Interesting what you say about the last week in August. I had noticed that prices seem to go down towards the end of the month.

Any other ideas for Mrs Clueless v welcome! Smile

We've been to the Siblu place at Lac Des Reves and loved it. Kids club is great and there is a lovely kids pool. Lots to do in the near vicinity and the beach is about a 10 min drive. We are going to La Carabasse this year - a little bit further south.

We live in Brussels (so equidistant from Calais really). We drove as far as the Novotel at Lyon Nord the first day - about 5 - 6 hours. Then we arrived at Lac des Reves at lunchtime the next day. It was an easy enough drive. We have thought of doing in one go, but I prefer breaking it up a bit. Lots of drinks/snacks and a dvd player = happy dd. We've done similar journeys in the car since dd was 3 with no bother.

TooTiredToArgue · 21/04/2011 16:18

Thanks Portoeufino Smile. That's really useful. We don't have any of those dvd players - might be the time to invest in some. Lac Des Reves does sound tempting. Reading the reviews, La Carabasse sounds a bit busier, and we're after something quite quiet and low key.

Frenchfancy if you're still out there, still interested to hear about Ile de Re!

frenchfancy · 21/04/2011 18:05

The only place I can actually recommend is this: www.iledereholidayhomes.com/index.html

But I know they book up pretty quickly.

Most of the accommodation on the island is French owned, so you could try Clévacances if you are looking for self catering.

There are alot of campsites with mobile homes on the island, but I don't know any specific ones to recommend. For me le bois plage would be the best place to stay if camping, or St Martin on Ré which is a lovely town, but on the other side of the island than the best beaches.

Look at Minorca, lovely and quiet lovely beaches and good buses if you do want to explore a bit without hiring a car.

TooTiredToArgue · 22/04/2011 20:09

Thanks, all. Good advice.

Frenchfancy that accommodation looks lovely. Sadly booked up, but maybe next year!
