Is £850 good value for a gite with pool in Southern Brittany in August?

title says it all really. Have found a lovely two bed gite in a cluster of three with shared pool, play area and garden. It looks well kept and characterful. It's in a small village with bakery etc which sounds perfect. But DH thinks it sounds v expensive for a two bed gite. Do others agree?

It does sound a bit expensive.
We're staying in a basic 4 bed farmhouse with a large private pool and enclosed garden in August and its costing £700 p/w. But this is in the Dordogne which I think is generally cheaper.

I found it through holiday rentals but it take me ages searching through hundreds of properties to find one that suited us!

Think it sounds fine...ish

We're paying well over £1000 for a place that sleeps six in south. I would want a private pool for £850 though and would have thought you could get that for that price.

It sounds expensive for Brittany.

But prices vary wildly according to how "nice" the inside decor i.

Is the pool heated?

Artichokes · 01/04/2011 14:56

Pool is heated. Decor is nice.

I know what you mean about a private pool. Although I actually thought sharing a pool might mean the DDs have the chance to make friends.

I think it is a bit pricey. But it's so hard finding anything available at this late in the day.

Is this considered late to be looking? Shock [panic emoticon]

I think sharing a pool would be nicer with DC too.

Actually it's quite hard to find those kind of clusters, so I would go for it.

We paid nearly that much (850 euro) for a not very nice house in the Dordogne last year.

Ruthiebabes · 01/04/2011 18:54

I would def go for it.

We went to a four gite cluster with shared pool in France last year and it was the best family holiday yet. The children made friends and we managed to sit by the pool and actually read a couple of books!!

Availability is hard to find now for this type of property for this summer so I would go for it. I personally prefer other families there, as the children love the company. In fact so did we, the adults sat around the pool in the eve watching the children whilst chatting and enjoying some vino!!

We've been looking at Brittany, and it does seem to be more expensive than the Loire or Normandy (where we've been before). We had a 3-bed gite with a private pool for only £500 2 years ago. It was bang in the middle of France, and quite a long way from anywhere but was very lovely!

dreamingofsun · 01/04/2011 19:18

brittany is beautiful though. if you get good weather its one of the nicest places in the world

Corriewatcher · 01/04/2011 20:00

We've been going to Brittany and staying in gites for the past few years.

I think that's actually good value if the gite is well maintained and not full of rickety-old junk shop furniture. August is definitely top-peak season in Brittany, and you would pay extra for a pool which is not the norm in that area. You might have been able to have found something cheaper if you'd been looking before Christmas, but I doubt you would find anything cheaper now.

TooTiredtoGoogle · 02/04/2011 08:01

That's not bad.
We;ve just paid near-on £700 for 10 days in mobile home on campsite in Vendee

jenpet · 02/04/2011 09:20

Will you be near the coast? I agree with those who have said go for it!
We own a gite and live here - we have no pool, though there is a huge complex 5 minutes away, and we're ten minutes from the beach - we charge £695.00 in July & August, and we're generally booked up a year in advance during the school holidays. I think the inside decor helps enormously, and I think it sounds like a reasonable price. You can always ring the owners and have a chat about the place, you'll get more of a "feel" for if it's right for you....

frenchfancy · 02/04/2011 14:00

I don't think it is over priced. With gites, as many things, you get what you pay for. So just because someone else has a private pool for that price doesn't mean they have better accommodation.

One thing to look out for - is the pool a "proper" in-ground pool the type of thing you can walk around and jump into, or is it an "above ground" pool so you have to climb up a ladder to get in, and you can't really jump in from the sides.

I think this makes a massive difference - I would take a proper shared pool any day rather than a private above ground pool.

Bunbaker · 03/04/2011 00:09

I don't think it is expensive. We paid nearly £700 for a two bedroom barn conversion in Cornwall two years ago. Given that just about everyone in France goes on holiday in August I think it is a bargain.

Anglaise1 · 05/04/2011 20:38

It is the going rate for a well maintained gite in Brittany. As well as having a proper inground pool, it is important that it is properly heated. Many say they are heated, but only use solar which is a waste of time in an area like Brittany. Look for reviews as well - a lot of gites are on Trip Advisor now - that can give you some idea as to the quality.

jamaisjedors · 06/04/2011 08:19

Did you book it? Can you link to it if you have?
