Egypt with a 1 year old?

I really fancy going to Egypt (Taba) with our 2 children (aged 1 and 7). There are some great deals about. I have been to Cairo about 20 years ago, before kids. And I am not so worried about the political situation.

But our little one is prone to bad stomach bugs, so I am wondering how wise this would be. I'd probably rather stay home than look after a sick child in a hotel room.

Have things improved since I last went? Should I book the cottage in Yorkshire instead?

We looked into Egypt with DS (17m) but discounted it because of the tummy bug problem - everyone I've talked to said they got ill there! It's the buffet food that usual does it, but I think generally bugs are hard to avoid, unless you're self catering.

We're off to Tenerife instead Grin

So I'd do Yorkshire if I were you; lovely place

Oooh, just thought of something else - would you consider Jordan? I have just been there (in January, without DS) and it is WONDERFUL.

We have always been fine in Egypt. All inclusive buffet style hotel food can cause problems. Just stick to restaurants and you will be fine.

Thanks! I agree Jordan is wonderful. We went there before kids (sigh) and I would love to go back and see some more.

Mainly looking at Egypt because we are skint and there are some amazing deals.

I wouldn't recommend Egypt with small children. My Husband has quite a strong stomach and was ill for 5 days. Me on the other hand have a sensitive stomach and I was ill for over a week. We couldnt go anywhere further than the pool.
Hope you find somewhere nice to go whatever you decide

I have taken my baby (and older children) twice to the Taba Hilton and had no problems at all.

The first time he was only 7 months so I took pouches and a cup which I washed in the free bottled water we were given, but he ate loads of the hotel's bread and bananas as well.

The second time he was 19 months and ate everything from the buffet. All the drinks were bottled/UHT anyway, and the hotel was so obviously clean and demanding about hygiene, we all ate raw fruit and salads with no ill effects. All guests were made to use anti-bac gel on their way into the buffet (and called back if they tried to slip through!), food handlers wore disposable gloves etc. The catering manager also offered to prepare food separately for anyone on a special diet.

I didn't hear of anyone else getting ill either. Part of the reason may have been that we went in December, when it was not too hot. Apparently dehydration makes you more likely to get ill. The high standard of hygiene was apparent throughout, not just in the buffet. It was a big factor in choosing to go back to the same place.

It was a wonderfully relaxing holiday. The all male staff were so kind and friendly, often whisking our baby away while we ate or stopping to play and chat with him. Many of them have small children they only get to see once a month when they have leave, and they are so natural with babies.

Another great thing about the Hilton was being able to have a room right on the beach (Nelson Village), so instead carting loads of stuff with you could nip back to get things as needed, leave wet/sandy gear on the room terrace etc.

Temp in Dec was perfect for babies, pleasantly warm but not hot in the day (21-24 degrees) and cool at night (cardigan/jumper over t-shirts).

Take grapefruit seed extract. Was recommended to take this when I went on a diving holiday in South Egypt. No dodgy tummy, but stayed at a small dive resort where the food wasn't sitting around for hours. Went in early May and found it pretty hot then, but was spending most of the time under water Smile. Also remember to brush teeth with bottled water.

Eating a natural yoghurt every morning is a good way to help prevent tummy troubles, but I would not recommend Egypt for young children.
I know it is tough when you want to visit places, but when you have children I think you have to put their needs and considerations before your own, until they are older.
We went to Egypt in early April, and it was 104 degrees. Too hot for us to sit in the sun and very wearying. Kids cannot cope with heat or changes in foods as most adults can.
