Foreign Travel with a 9 month old...HELP!

LilyHeathersMum · 20/03/2011 09:01

I have to go abroad later this year when my DD will be 9 months old. I am not looking forward to dealing with the whole bottles/feeding/sterilising issue whilst travelling and once we are there so any advice from those of you who have done it before would be gratefully recieved. Also I have been told to get a cheap buggy as it is likely to bashed about in the hold during the flight but I obviously want something comfortable for DD so any recommendations also appreciated.

If you breastfeed, you don't have to worry about bottles.

Travelling at this age is pretty easy.

I'm not breastfeeding so do have to worry about bottles but surely I will also have to consider sterilising beakers, spoons etc???

Where are you going? Abroad is a big place.
The age of your DD is a good one (even for long haul). With regards to sterilising, you can use milton tablets probably. I don't know if you can still buy them. DD has been out of sterilised stuff for 9 years now.

Where abouts are you staying abroad? is it self catering or a hotel? With regards to the buggy question, have flown several times with ds and his buggy was no worse for being in the luggage hold

You can buy a large tupperware and take milton tablets with you or have a look online for oasis bags. Come in a box of 7 - one for each day. Tablet is already in the bag so you just fill it with water and bin it after. Plenty of room for bottles, dummies, spoons etc.

For feeding on the flight you can either sterilise before you leave and put lids on bottles or buy sterilised disposable bottles from boots which you use and bin. These were brilliant when we used them. No washing up or asking cabin crewe to rinse out.

My buggy has always been fine (maclaren) while flying. No damage but I did buy a buggy bag for it.

Boots sell sterilisng bags which are drawstring plastic bags with a steri tablet in (handy to hang on the back of doors if you're in a hotel) & each bag lasts 24 hours. If you're in a hotel, take a couple of cloths & some fairy in a little bottle & some milton spray to clean the sink then you can clean the bottles, cups etc in your room. If you're staying somewhere self catering, you could get a microwave steriliser or microwave steri bags. Make sure you sterilise everything before your flight & they'll be ok til you get there or get the pre sterilised bottles (but try one before you go to make sure your DS will drink from them). Get some pouches of baby food for the flight so you just need to squeeze them onto a spoon.

No ideas re buggy cos you'll need something that reclines at 9 months. Can you not take whatever you use at home & maybe get a travel bag to put it in, or have it gate checked & that way you have it til as late as poss & it's possibly less likely to get damaged. We're travelling next month with 9 month old & planning on taking his normal pushchair & hoping for the best!

Thanks for all the responses! All sounds relatively fuss free and sure I am worrying about nothing. Think I will go down the sterilising bags route as we will be staying in a hotel. Will also definately try using disposable bottles for travelling.
Thanks for the tips about the buggy also, will probably invest in a buggy bag and get it gate checked. My DD is a bit of a whopper so she'll need the buggy for as long as possible as we won't be able to carry her all the time!
