My friend lives nearby and took me on a short visit with her two DSs when I was PG - I thought it was excellent

JanH · 24/10/2005 20:14

There are 2 Roald Dahl places - the Gallery in the County Museum in Aylesbury here and the Museum in Gt Missenden where he used to live.

I think the Museum may be more expensive, but more authentic maybe.

JanH · 24/10/2005 20:16

You can stay as long as you like at the Museum

We want to go, too, lynny70 - could you possibly give directions if coming from South London? Don't know where arfur is, but there are loads of MNers in this neck of the woods, so hopefully it would be of communal benefit.

Dd is Dahl-mad

arfur · 24/10/2005 20:45

Thanks Lynny70 I am coming from Newbury so A34 to oxford and then I am lost to be honest - got directions on aa routefinder which seem hideously complicated any help would be greatly appreciated!

JanH - you can stay in the museum as long as you like but the RD gallery is entry for one hour on the hour and booking is recommended - spoke to the museum today.

We are going tomorrow so will let you know what dd (6) and ds (almost 4) think of it!.

Thanks everyone!

what about the new place in Great Missenden which has been heavily featured in the press?

JanH · 24/10/2005 20:48

Sorry, arfur, when I said Museum I meant the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Gt Missenden - the one I linked to as "the Museum" (the one in Aylesbury is "the Gallery"). You can stay in the Gt Missenden one aslong as you like. They have lots of family activities on too.

I went to the museum at Great Missenden during the summer holidays and thought it was fab. Lots of interaction for the kids to get involved with (and I took loads of ideas away for my classroom) and so much information about Roald Dahl. A great tribute. Definately agree it's a long way to go, we took the train from Paddington, and we were done in a couple of hours. There is a great big park around the corner though. That killed some more time before the journey back.

kiwibelle - we'd also take the train if we were to venture out. When you arrived in Great Missenden, was it walking distance to the museum? How long was the train journey? And finally, what is the youngest age the museum would be suitable for? Thanks for the advice.

Hi Earlybird... the train journey was about 40 minutes and we really enjoyed it. The walk from the station is straightforward, down to the main road, turn right and it's a few hundred metres along the road. Probably five or ten minutes walk. We went with a 3, 6, and 9 year old and they all enjoyed it.

I've just been at the site
and it mentions that the Aylesbury gallery is more suitable for young children. I hadn't heard of this place before this thread but our girls had loads of fun at the Museum. Hope that helps.

Earlybird · 27/10/2005 19:21

Thanks for info kiwibelle. Think I may leave it awhile until dd is a bit older....but, glad to know that getting there from London is so straightforward.

Just sorting through some old boxes of books on Monday I found my old autograph book I kept as a child... My ds was amazed to see I had both Roald Dahl's autograph and Tom Baker's (he was Dr Who in those days...)

Oops showing my age!

We have just taken our children to the Childrens Gallery today and they had a great time.
The Gallery was celebrating being open 10 years so they were charging the prices from 10 years ago. They had arranged lots of Roald Dahl activities to help celebrate the anniversary. They had face painting, party games, short shows from the Revolting Rhymes book, craft activities and quizzes. All children we given a goody bag with a loaf of warburtons bread (they sponsored the event and came in handy as the kids enjoyed the day so much they missed lunch)and a Roald Dahl book. So for our family of 6 it cost £10.50 and then we got 4 new books (cheapest priced at £5.99) and 4 loaves of bread. But best of all the kids thoughly enjoyed the children's gallery and the main museum(which is free to enter) and cant wait to go again. Please make sure you book for the Roald Dahl gallery as they were turning people away at 2 oclock (it only cost £1 per group to book) An Excellent day out and we will definately be going back. When I made enquiries I saw told it was suitable for keystage 1 &2 children.(my children range from 5 to 11 years and they all loved it) Here is the website: click here
