LAPLAND CLOTHING

Hi there everybody. I am off to Lapland with my son on 17th December and I wanted to know what I NEED to take to wear? I have bought obvious things like gloves, scarfs and hats (and thermal undies!) but somebody mentioned that I should take a balaclava for my son. Do you think this is necessary? Also, does anyone have one? (he is 7) Any other advice would be great. Thanks.

Hi There,

We took my ds last year to Lapland. We just had the normal gloves, hats etc and in fact I didn't even wear my hat as I was too warm in it. The weather wasn't as cold as we thought but then it could be colder this year. We had a fantastic time. Your son will love it. I would love to go back yet as it was so nice. Have a great time.

I would say to go with what you have got for now. Unless the temperatures really drop to say below -20 or so I would not worry about a balaclava as long as you have good hats to cover your head and ears. I spent 3yrs in FInland and remember once taking my hood down to see if a bus was coming and the wind really caught me by suprise, my ears hurt like hell for a bit, that was -19.

Keep a check here on temperatures

weather in Finland

have a wonderful time, are you going to Rovaniemi? Have been a couple of times and loved the Santa village.

check the weather forecast, my mum took ds to lapland last year and were told that if it was cold enough they would provide them with ski suits, it turned out it was quite mild (for lapland) and a vest, jumper, big boat, hat and gloves were more than adequate. there was still plenty of snow for it to be christmassy and they had a great time. hope you do too!

I agree with Vickymum, Lapland can be lovely and suprises people thats it not as cold as they think it will be.

Also remember that its so dry over there that low temperatures are not the same as they are here.
I used to come back to England for Christma when I lived there and was always so so so cold here, which friends could not understand as I lived in FInland then.

you will have a fabulous time there. Lapland is magical. Have never been to Muonio before I went toward the Rusiian border so the opposite side. But Lapland is just a fabulous place to visit, apart from summer when its plagued by mossies.

have a wonderful time and make sure that you tast reindeer stew and also the berries from lapland.

I am definately going to make the most of it. We have booked to stay in an igloo the night too! I'm not sure who the kid is, me or ds!! Thanks for your best wishes. A x
