Friends coming over from the US to visit the UK for the first time. Have no idea what interests they have, and having asked them they just say they'd be happy to do anything!

Is there anything/anywhere in the UK that you think a visitor would love to see/really shouldn't miss on their visit here?

I've obviously thought about London as it's the capital, but a bit stuck now!

Any ideas please?

Stratford-upon-Avon is really popular with Americans, everyone knows of Shakespeare so that is a good place to visit.

What about one of the big castles like Windsor or Warwick? Or a historic city like Bath or York?

We had friends over from Canada a couple of years ago and London was immensely popular, the Tower of London, all the historic sites like Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace etc.

Not sure how long they will be here for but you could look like further afield like Cornwall or Edinburgh? Somewhere like the Eden Project would probably be quite interesting to most people.

Not sure how much time they have and how much travelling you can do, but when we had friends over from nz, we tried to "do" a little bit from as many periods of history as poss. Stonehenge/ avebury for prehistory. Then pick a roman site depending on where you are, chester, york, bath, fishbourne, hadrian's wall etc. Can turn into a good game. If they're around for a bit, visitro membership of NT or eng heritage may be good value. Fwiw, i would go with history rather than natural history, as uk wild places can seem rather tame to americans!

I used to have the same dilemmas every weekend or holidays or every times relative came to visit, where to take the kids??? what are the best places? family friendly places?? pet friendly places?? Fortunately I've found an online guide www.dayoutwiththekids.co.uk/ it makes my life easier in that aspect, is brilliant and saves me lots of time and headaches.
