1-2 weeks in sept/oct, want to do Italy but have a nearly 3yr old so Rome will have to wait!

Been looking around and Sardinia seems pretty cool. Hapy (infact probably want to) travel around a fair bit, get a mix of culture and beach

Any suggestions?

Sardinia is beautiful, and v kid friendly, lovely beaches and clean. People are friendly. South of the island is more touristy. Places tend to start shutting up for winter in oct tho, so don't go near end of the month or you won't find anywhere open! Theres not a vast amount of culture in sardinia compared to Rome.

agree that culture is a bit thin on the ground in Sardinia. However, we did visit Nora when we were there 3 years ago. Stunning ruins - perhaps some of the most complete of a roman village that I have ever seen, particularly the ampitheatre. My DCs were 4 and 8 when we went and they loved it.

We stayed at Hotel Flamingo in Margherita di Pula. Not as posh as Forte Village and others along that coastline but very Italian, iyswim.

We had a fab time there when our DD was 3. She loved the pasta and beaches and people were so friendly. Stayed near Alghero which has nice streets to stroll around, near beach. If you see a bob the builder toy on the beach say hello-she lost it there and we often joke about how he loved it there so much he decided to stay!

so is alghero preferable to caligari? Just in terms of general area and cities themselves, seeing as they seem to be the major aiports to fly to...

We loved Alghero, but things to do are a bit limited if you don't want to do the beach every day. Some nice restaurants, pleasant strolls along the sea and town walls. Some caves to visit by boat, lots of lovely beaches, some with facilities, others not. Really need a car to get to the nicer ones. There are some wierd ancient ruin type things dotted around you can visit (all a bit samey after a couple though). We visited Sassari one day, but it was pretty boring. The road network isn't brilliant, so although it isn't a massive island it takes ages to get anywhere. When planning the holiday we thought we'd get around much more than we did e.g. up into the mountains or down to Pula. With a small toddler though the journey times were just not realistic.

We enjoyed the holiday though, lovely villa, great weather (september), great food (lots of fresh markets) very low key and relaxing.

We would go to Sardinia again, maybe this year in fact, but will probably head south for a bit of variety
