DO NOT fly British Airways pregnant or with kids

I am 5 months pregnant and I just finished a week long trip to London from Vancouver, Canada, and had the worst possible experience ever on British Airways.

When I got onto the plane, I asked for assistance to put my carry on luggage onto the overhead compartment, but the cabin crew refused to help me. They told me that "health and safety" regulations prohibited them from doing any lifting. I asked them what I was supposed to do with my suitcase, and finally the crew agreed to let me keep it in a closet in between Business and First.

During my flight, I was made to feel EXTREMELY uncomfortable when I had to retrieve an item from my suitcase, as I had to walk through Business class.

When we arrived in London, we had to go down a set of stairs to get on a bus to get tot he terminal. Once again, the crew told me they were unable to assist me with my suitcase, and their solution was to suggest I leave it on the plane and "perhaps" another passenger would bring it down for me. I was told that as a passenger I am not supposed to carry any luggage that I am unable to lift over my head. I ended up struggling with the suitcase myself.

On the way back, thankfully other passengers assisted me with my luggage, but I did notice that the bulkhead seats were not prioritized for pregnant women, or for small children. A friend happened to be on the same flight with his 15 month old, and he was given a bulkhead seat so that his baby could sleep in a bassinet during the flight, but there was a woman 3 rows back with a 21 month old who was forced to keep the hold on her lap the entire flight, even though there were adults sitting in bulkhead seats who would have been more than capable to sit in a regular seat.

Aside from a few exceptions, the staff were rude and totally unhelpful. I was given a dirty look when I walked all the way tot he back of the plane to use the toilet (as the one in the middle was being used), not one made any effort whatsoever to assist in my trip. Plus, despite being at the airport 3 hours early, my suitcase failed to make the flight.

After sharing these thoughts with friends, I have been told my many people that they suffered similar experiences.

I have made several other flights since I have been pregnant, and no one has managed to make me feel as uncomfortable and unwelcome as British AIrways.

I have travelled BA/Qantas with DS every time since we first took him to Australia when he was 10mo. Then we had a bassinet, but it was really too small, so the staff switched it for the reclining seat - much better. They were great.

Next time, he was 20mo and it was our emigration flight. Didn't get bulkhead seats, but that was better - we had three window seats (hadn't realised that, because our return flight would be when DS was 2, he had been booked a seat out as well). Realised that actually, with a larger toddler, being able to lift the arms of the seats so he can lie across your lap is infinitely preferable to bulkhead seats where the arms are fixed (as they also were in the 777 plane we flew back in last time, having been upgraded to World Traveller Plus - making it actually a less enjoyable flight than if we'd been in World Traveller!)

I have never encountered rude or discourteous staff on BA or Qantas; or in fact Cathay Pacific or Singapore Airlines (the other ones I have used). The only rude and unhelpful air staff I have come across were on North Worst West airlines, travelling to America. Nightmare!!

Also - last but one time I came back to Australia with DS on my own, I got altitude sickness (thank God DS was asleep!) and the air staff (Qantas) were brilliant, helped me out and organised ground staff to wheelchair me out through customes etc.; they also got all my baggage and the fold-up buggy for me. Couldn't have been more helpful.

BA were great with me when I was 5 months pregnant with twins. Mind you I occasionally carried my 3 year old too so perhaps I was experiencing second pregnancy syndrome which is completely different to first pregnancy syndrome!

You have to book bulkhead seats...

ummmm, I think that's it.

Can't be arsed to read all this, just wanted to say I regularly fly BA to Vancouver & the staff are fab. Have flown the route way more pregnant than 5 mths and with baby/toddler and cannot complain.

We have flown loads with BA and young kids - they are great.

sunnydelight · 11/03/2011 01:14

I don't fly BA or Qantas after too many horror stories to list. Incompetent, rude, unhelpful, with or without kids.

Kiwinyc · 20/03/2011 15:27

Oh cry me a river!

Have flown long haul twice on BA with babies and very, very pleasantly surprised both times. Prioritised boarding, very helpful, caring staff who dont sneer at your child like they're an irritation which is what happened on Virgin.

You're clearly absolutely clueless. Why don't you just employ a lackey to follow around after you to keep your world precious. And god help us that you raise your child with the same values and sense of entitlement.

PinkWinged · 20/03/2011 15:36

BA is awful full stop - I wouldn't fly BA pregnant or not!

Kiwinyc · 20/03/2011 15:37

But not as awful as Virgin...

PavlovtheCat · 20/03/2011 15:43

I travelled BA with a small baby. They were fantastic. And later with a toddler. Also great. The first time, we were upgraded to business class due to serious delays and problems (not BA, another company who got us a flight on BA) and they were so lovely, they properly spoiled DH, me and DD (who was good as gold aged 6 months). The second time, they took our pushchair and put it in their own locker so it was easy to get at the other end rather than wait for it to be removed from the hold, they held DD for me while DH and I organised ourselves, we did not ask, they offered! They made sure we had the travel seat attached to the bulkhead asap so we could get ourselves settled. They checked on us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed and they moved the guy sat next to us in the bulkhead so he had a nicer quiet journey and we had more space to spread out.

No problems there whatsoever.

PavlovtheCat · 20/03/2011 15:44

virgin = money grabbing bastards. The worst experience of long haul travel at all. They seem to go out of their way to make the experience bad.

I haven't read of the responses but I agree with MotherMOuntainGoat on the first page.

My parents live abroad, not driving distance so have to take planes.
When I set off, I assume no one will help me and if they do, that's a bonus.

YABU to fly BA. They are always on strike.

Yabu to take carry on luggage that you cant even lift, let alone carry out of the airplane yourself.

MainlyMaynie · 20/03/2011 22:15

The OP is hilarious. I've been flying regularly while pregnant and with SPD and it's never occurred to me that the attendants should help me carry my stuff. If you can't carry your luggage, how did you get it to the plane?! And were there no other passengers? I see tall men helping petite women with the overhead lockers all the time.

Actually, it hadn't occurred to me that I deserved any special treatment for being pregnant. I did get upgraded a couple of weeks ago, but assumed that was being a frequent flyer not pregnancy. I've even been thinking about how I can cause minimum hassle flying with crutches next week. Clearly the wrong attitude. I should ask the staff to give me a queen's chair from check-in...
