Virgin Atlantic - Baby Milk/Food Restrictions

Hi

Has anyone flown to the USA with Virgin in the last few weeks? I checked the direct.gov.uk website earlier, and they said that you are allowed to take enough milk/sterilised water/food through security as you need for your baby during the flight. Virgin's website however says that the limit you can take on board is 100ml. That was last updated at the end of December.

Has anyone flown with a baby recently who can advise - not sure what we are meant to do if limit really is 100ml!

Thanks

Caroline

You can take what you need for the flight but you may be asked to taste it at security.
We took baby porridge, bottle of milk 200mls and a bottle of water but were asked to taste everything

I haven't flown with Virgin but that does seem really strange, most babies over the age of a couple of months would be drinking more than 100mls at a time. also I can't imagine that any FA would care how much you brought onto the plane and Virgin staff wouldn't actually check your bags anyway, is there a number on their website you can call just for peace of mind?

When I flew to the states, I took 3 bottles with 210ml of water in each and then the milk powder in a seperate container, also took a couple of pouches of baby food, I was asked to taste 2 of the bottles by security thats all, they weren't bothered by the food at all.

You will be fine taking more

Thanks for your responses. I did email Virgin to double check but they haven't responsed yet. I was sure I had seen people on board in the past with way more stuff than one 100ml bottle - but didn't want to get caught out!

Off to Florida with 7 month old son in a few weeks - can't wait!

Baby stuff can exceed 100ml
BAA info

"What about bottles or cartons of prepared milk or sterilised water? Do they need to be a maximum of 100ml?

If you are travelling with an infant, these items can exceed 100ml and do not have to fit into the resealable bag. However, the amount must be sufficient for your trip only and you may be asked to open the containers and taste the contents. There are no limits for formula milk powder, and bottled water is available in shops after security. Your airline can provide water during the flight.

Can I buy cartons of formula milk from the shops after security?

Yes. Boots sell ready-to-drink formula in both 250ml and 500ml sizes after security. Every country which is implementing the new security arrangements has accepted that parents with babies should be able to carry sufficient baby food/milk for the journey, so "reasonable amounts" are exempted ? although you may be asked to open the containers and taste the contents when going through BAA's UK airports
If you wish to reserve formula milk for purchase in the shops after security control, please email [email protected]."

Just to update - I had a response from Virgin's customer care team. They have confirmed that you can take sufficient milk/food on board for the duration of the flight. They also provide (if requested prior) Heinz baby foods for infants from 4 - 12 months. I notice they have taken the misleading statement (which put me in a panic in the first place!) off their website!
