Get an all in one costume, better a top and bottom type one so you can change her nappy.
We lived in Oman for three years, it is a lovely lovely place with friendly helpful people. If you are FF take a supply of what you generally use, DD had so many different brands because there wasn't a guaranteed supply.
Drugs for children are readily available, although if she uses anything out of the ordinary, take it with you. When we lived there, certain drugs had to be ordered in from Dubai.
Take your own sun block, the sun is strong as there is no pollution - something we noticed when we moved to Bangkok.
Get used to the idea that people will look at her. Particularly if she is fair skinned. DD was always an attraction.
Enjoy your holiday. Which part are you going to?

You will need a swimming costume if you are going to take her in the water so get her a UV suit and lots of high factor sun cream.

gregssausageroll · 22/02/2011 18:25

I can highly recommend an allday factor 50 that you can buy on QVC. It is called ultrasun.

emsken · 22/02/2011 18:55

I wasn't planning on taking her swimming - thought i should keep her out the sun all the time?!!

We are off to Muscat and can't wait!

Not wanting to continuously cover our boy in sunblock, we've bought high spf rash vests/trousers - they're fairly thin so he won't overheat, but they'll keep the sun off and have a good SPF.

Also, silvered parasols (well, umbrellas I guess) were used a lot when I was living in Asia

kreecherlivesupstairs · 23/02/2011 05:40

TBH, you will be hard pushed to keep her out of the sun. It is an outstandingly sunny place.
Are you going to visit family? or do you know someone in the country who could arrange a visa to be ready when you arrive? Otherwise you could spend an hour or so queuing up.

Nefret · 23/02/2011 19:01

You have to take her swimming, it will be very hot there and it is the best way to keep her cool. You don't need to keep babies out of the sun all the time, just avoid the hottest part of the day and take her in the morning or late afternoon, if she has a UV suit on she will be fine.

emsken, you can't get them from the Embassy (or at least you couldn't when we lived there), someone needs to go to the odd place in the Shatti mall to get one.
Presumably if you are going with a holiday company they could do it for you.

emsken · 03/03/2011 21:46

I am sad to say i have had to cancel our trip due to the "unrest" in the middle east - don't want to put my baby at any risk unnecessarily - SooO sad!

That's a shame, I know someone who came back yesterday and there is no trouble out there at all.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 05/03/2011 06:10

I agree netfret, we have several friends who still live there, nothing has changed for them and they've seen no violence or unrest. I do understand the OPs decision though.

jsut incase other sun conscious mums are reading..
the homeopathic remedy Lycopodium is great for prickly heat rash which babies get if they get too sweaty under all that cream.
shade is better than cream and if the pool has no shade just get a washing up bowl from a hardware store and let her play in it in the shade, even take it to the beach so she can cool off and play under your umbrella..
and generally, DHs complain more about heat at night than children do!
