DD's passport photo was taken at 6 months. When will she need a new one?

She's three and a half now and obviously doesn't look much like her baby pic. At what point am I required to update it or can I just keep the baby pic till her passport runs out at six years old?

My ds is now eight, and his passport pic was taken when he was 6 months old.

i think it's safe to say that he's changed somewhat in the interim Grin!

I've never heard that you need to update a photo. Am in Ireland tho, so maybe laws are different to the UK.

Child passports last for 5 years - you will need to update the photo then.

SoupDragon · 14/02/2011 12:41

Yes, just keep the photo until the passport runs out.

bigTillyMint · 14/02/2011 12:41

It should say the date the passport runs out in her current passport - you have to update it by then or she won't have a valid passport. You will need 2 new photo's and have to pay over £50 for the pleasure.

My DC had their first ones for five years, then the next for five years - now onto 3rd passports, may even need a 4th before they can get 10 year ones Angry

TubbyDuffs · 14/02/2011 12:41

I thought the passports only lasted 5 years and then you need to get a new one.

bellavita · 14/02/2011 12:43

5 years.

I have just renewed the passports for the boys - the cost is ludicrous.

Anonymousbird · 14/02/2011 12:43

Just when the passport needs renewing. 5 years for children.

Itsjustafleshwound · 14/02/2011 12:44

As per the directgov website, a child's passport lasts for 5 years - they then need to be renewed and only get the 10 year passport once they are 16 yo

Thanks all. Phew, one less job on the admin pile...

Five years - but you can renew it for up to 9 months before expiry and that time will be added to the new one

"You can apply to renew the passport at any time. If there is any time left on the old passport IPS will add it to the new passport, up to a maximum of nine months."

I'll be renewing my DD's as soon as we have 9 months left, as her pic was taken at 6 weeks and she didn't look like it even a day later

sleepwhenidie · 14/02/2011 12:59

Oricella-I got caught out by that rule about time being left when I tried to renew DS1s passport last year. It doesn't apply to children's passports! Very Angry having gone to passport office specifically to sort it out six months before expiry date.

To add insult to injury I seem to remember the explanation given was that the photo would be too different as children change so much in 5 years Hmm not so much between 5 and 10 as they do from 0 to 5 I think!!

oricella · 14/02/2011 13:33

really? Just copied that from the passport site here - will double check before I take action.

oricella · 14/02/2011 13:34

maybe the rules have changed - because I thought it used to be 6 months, but now it states 9

My dd2 was 4 weeks old when she got her first passport photo taken. At that point she had black hair and a really fat face. We went on holiday with just a few days to spare on the passport, she is now blonde so looked nothing like her photo at all but no questions were asked - just a reminder that it was running out!

sleepwhenidie · 14/02/2011 14:01

It applies to adult passports but they wouldn't do it for the childrens one last spring....call them to check though?
