cultural fun in Spain

lyra41 · 09/02/2011 18:52

Hi we are off to Spain for 2 weeks in Aug. The first week we will spend by the pool and beach in Elviria, near Marbella. The second week we want to drive somewhere to enjoy a bit more Spanish culture, whatever that may entail.
Any suggestions?
We would stay wherever we went for our cultural fun in some kind of self-catering villa, preferably with a pool.

We went to Grenada or Granada. Don't remember how to spell it, sorry. We visited the Al Hambra and just had a really good time wandering round.
The sierra Madre mountains are good too.

kreecher do you have details of where you stayed? We're looking for self catering for 2 adults and 2 kids.

Sorry, we just drove around until we found a hotel with a parking area.
DH panicked because the windows opened really wide and DD is a great climber. He ended up buying a roll of string and tying them closed.

Lots of things to do. Definitely Granada - The Alhambra ( you will have to pre book your day in the summer) and the Sacramonte where you can see Flamenco etc. If you can afford it stay in the Parador or the Trypp Albaicin
Don't miss a trip to Nerja, a popular place for tourists which has retained it's character. I got married in the church on the main square. Hotels are the Balcon de Europa, Carabeo or Riu Monica.
There are also spectacular caves.
Frigiliana is another place to see, 'the white village.'
The Mosque at Cordoba is also very popular.
Andalucia is a beautiful region to explore.

Granada and Cordoba are well worth a visit. A word of warning though - driving in both cities is a nightmare. Cordoba has a fearsome one way system and we went round it 6 times before we could get out, and this was nearly 20 years ago!

Should add. Granada at that time of year is dead apart from tourism. It's stifling hot due to it's location and most locals go to the coast at weekends.

lyra41 · 14/02/2011 15:59

Yes Kendodd, that is a bit of a worry, so much so that dh is suggesting that dd and I go on our own for a couple of days as he can't face the temp. I'm wondering if I can either. it's just that dd is so bored with going to the same place every year where we visit Grandma (costa del sol) so we are trying to add a bit of variety for her sake. we do have ds2 aged 5 to consider however, and I think maybe Granada will be too hot for him too in Aug.

I would definitely stick to the coast - Nerja or Almuñecar, La Herradura all on the Costa Tropical. Granada is only a day trip from there. Capistrano Village in Nerja is great for self catering, privately or through tour operators. Air con, communal pools and a good base to explore.
I lived in Granada and it's stifling hot from end of June onwards.

Thanks KenDodd

That's really helpful.

We took our 2 kids to Barcelona for a week in July 2009 - they were then aged 2 & 4 and they absolutely loved it. LOADS to do - perfect for wandering aimlessly and people watching, street entertainers could amuse kids all day, great markets, great culture with all the Gaudi stuff esp. (My 4 year old (now 6) still talks about La Sagrada Familia), Montjuic etc... Also less cultural, but other fun things to do like Nou Camp, FANTASTIC zoo, aquarium (great if it's too hot for you and you fancy a cool day indoors), Tibidabo etc... It was over 30C the whole time we were there, but our kids coped fine. We stayed in an apartment just off Las Ramblas (booked through a company called Habitat Apartments I think), walked to La Boqueria every morning to buy breakfast and lunch things, then ate out in restaurants in the evening.
