Can you recommend good place to stay in the Pennines (Yorkshire side), pref. self-catering?

We've got a week off week after next and I want to go 'home' (actually haven't lived there since I was little but need a nostalgic trip).

Does anyone know any nice hotels that can cope with toddlers, or self-catering holiday cottages? Possibly near Holmfirth? Want to be able to reach Upper Denby, near Huddersfield, to see my godmother.

Grateful for any suggestions! Thanks.

I suppose "near Huddersfield" isn't an obvious place for people to have holiday familiarity with, Easy

Is Upper Denby near Denby Dale? (Not that I know somewhere for you, just curious)

teeavee · 13/10/2005 20:28

always wanted to go there myself, but no tips I'm afraid - will watch this thread with interest though

edam · 13/10/2005 20:32

Yes Jan, very near Denby Dale. And don't diss it - lovely countryside (as seen in that really tedious programe Last of the Summer Wine). Used to live in Denby Dale when I was little - our village school had a special trip to the woods to see the grave of the pie that went bad!

Wasn't dissing it at all, easy - just saying Huddersfield isn't renowned as a holiday destination!

Huddersfield hotels

Bear with me, I'll have a bit of a google for you.

JanH · 13/10/2005 20:42

trace2's link (a couple in Holmfirth)

edam · 13/10/2005 20:44

Thank you, Janh. It's edam, btw!

Not actually intending to spend any time in Huddersfield itself, just the countryside around it.

How do you know Denby Dale?

trace2 · 13/10/2005 20:45

thanks JanH its lovely place even in winter just very cold

JanH · 13/10/2005 20:48

Oh, edam, so sorry (I have always mentally confused the 2 names btw, but never so openly!)

I shared a flat at college with a girl from Denby Dale. She married a Kiwi and emigrated to NZ but is back there now.

Thank you everyone!

Janh, if she happens to be 34 to 38, I probably knew her. And she almost certainly knows my godmother.

Ooh, Janh, very long shot, but she's not called Tania is she?

OP posts:
JanH · 13/10/2005 22:22

Oh, no, edam, she is much older than that (rather like one ) and not called Tanya either.

JanH · 13/10/2005 22:23

Or Tania

edam · 13/10/2005 22:32

Oh well, was worth checking! Definitely not Tanya, darling, Tania said with a very loooong a. Brothers were called Simon and Rupert and surname was double-barrelled so not a Tanya at all. Apparently named after a Russian elephant her mother saw shortly before giving birth.
