Yorvik - plus hotel

Anyone been? Is it good? How long do we need in there? Also, can anyone recommend a good hotel (not B&B) near the city centre. Doesn't have to be dirt cheap, but not megabucks either.

it's quite good, but only takes about an hour or so to look round and it's quite expensive. York castle museum is good and worth a visit. You should look round the minster too, it's very beautiful (but you have to pay to get in).

Sarah Coggles is good for clothes shopping, and there are some lovely vintage shops too.

There are squillions of hotels in York, what's your budget?

York doesn't really have many good hotels.

It's Viking week at half term- usually lots of stuff going on.

Hotel du vin?
there is a basic novotel a very very short walk from yorvik with a car park. Rooms vary but theta have fa ily rooms. Superiior/deluxe ones are ok- not great.

Thanks - DS is studying Vikings at school this term, hence the trip to Yorvik.

Hotels - don't mind too much what it's like, as long as it's comfortable and can provide a family room. Budget - up to 110

Yorvik is good, it doesn't take up too much time though. I took ds to the dungeons, then to the museum which was fab! They have rebuilt a victorian street inside the museum and you can go into some of the shops.

We didn't stay overnight though so can't help with hotels, sorry.

There's a new-ish premier travel inn quite near the centre of York. Not sure how much it is but I expect under your budget.

The premier inn is near to the railway station, probably 15 min walk to Jorvik.
We stayed in a slightly weird (in an OK kind of way) hostel in Micklegate right in the middle of town for hardly any money, B+B. they have wonderful, enormous family rooms in the attic, with no shared/hostel type dorms on that floor at all. Lots of space for crashing out, playing lego, colouring etc. Really peaceful in fact, with beautiful views of the Minster from the eaves windows.
DIY toast/cereal etc in the morning, with lovely PVC tablecloths and nothing to break or spill (we took a 3yo!)
Loads to do, I think - we live 1/2 hr away now and still find new things to do.
Boat trip is fun, Minster is great if your children are older, Jorvik great, also a sister attraction called 'Dig'. Amazing and free National train museum (undercover!!) can take up the best part of a day if your children (or DH) are that way inclined. Lovely museum in the middle of town on the river with fantastic viking and roman artefacts and very, very hands-on for primary school age.
Air museum at Elvington about 15min drive away, but very cold at this time of year (in a bleak airstrip kind of way)
