Deauville - anyone been?

We had 6/7 days of rain on our last summer holiday in Cornwall. I know France is not that far away but I fancy somewhere else (maybe in Northern France) this year.
Can anyone recommend an area/resort for 2 pre-schoolers?

We visited Deauville last summer in the rain lol ! Normandy was great but our dc are older and could appreciate the ww2 stuff when the weather turned.

We've been to Normandy twice with ours. We stayed at campsites at Houlgate (not far from Deauville) and St Pair sur Mer more towards Brittany.) We found lots to do in the area and, if the weather's good, the beaches in the Deauville area are lovely.

deauville is lovely, as is honfleur, but don't bank on the weather. If you want sun but don't want to drive too far south try the vendee or the loire valley. K.

I have had 6 days of rain in June in Normandy personally I would go South La Rochelle or further.

OK, I'll revise the plan, it seems we might as well be in the UK weatherwise.
I have been many years ago South of Bordeaux and it was lovely with great beaches and sand dunes. Not sure how long it would take to drive these days (took 3 whole days and 2 nightsConfused then!)

We used to go to Ile D'Oleron - can highly recommend for families and weather. Used to drive down in a day (left East Anglia at 5am, arrived at hotel about 8pm french time) took the ferry to Calais and had three stops. It is a long drive but not impossible. On the way back we used to have a stop overnight at Amiens.

If you want anymore info just shout. Would also advise you to look anywhere South of Nantes/Angers/Tours.

Why not get the train to the South? That's what we're doing. Less stressful than driving and quite cheap if you book ahead. Kids under 4 go for free.

I wouldn't bank on great weather in Loire either. We went there in July/August last year and got a lot of rain.

After two solid days of researching tunnel times, ferries, campsites etc. DH has veteod the whole idea and we're back to Cornwall for 2 weeks this time (in the hope of a day or two of sunshine).
Maybe next year......

Shame...my BIL and SIL spent about 6 years on the trot going to Cornwall...and then had 3 weeks of rain. ie every day of their long hols was wet. They decided to try France and are totally converted. they (like us) go to the Alps. The journey takes 2 days (although we have done overnight ferry and got there that afternoon) and it is great.

Anyway - I hope you have a lovely holiday!

moragbellingham · 20/02/2011 11:41

I am hopeful rather than expectant! I booked a place with a covered pool for the second week, just in case.

I think the whole Channel tunnel experience, different language/culture/food thing would've been so amazing for the DCs. And I wanted to go, of courseGrin.

That's a shame. Why has he vetoed it? Can we help you to get him to change his mind? Grin

moragbellingham · 20/02/2011 21:18

He hates queueing, crowds and anything that is not straightforward. A to B is what he likes with no faffing inbetween.
I should've been working on him for longer but at least I know when to start the preparations for next year's holiday - like NOW!

If he hates crowds, why are you going to Cornwall?!
