Mexico? With a 4 year old?

Looking at holidays for May/June time, and thought as ds is a bit older we could try a long haul, as we usually stick to canaries.

I know absolutely nothing about Mexico.... Although I guess what we need from a holiday is 4/5* preferably all inclusive, plenty of activities suitable for a 4 year old, but also some things we can go and do to get out of the hotel for a few hours a day, even if it's just a wander around town/ wee trip.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Gran Bahia Principe (Tulum) is also good. [Thinks back 4 weeks, looks out the window at grey South London). We have been several times.
The 10 hour flight goes quite quickly if you have seatback telly with kids films, games on the DS, games and audio books on iPod/Phone.
I would arrange an independent transfer if going down to Riviera Maya (Cancun Valet are good). Going on the coach can be a drag.
We have the equivalent of 18 stays here and not one bad belly to report. The hotel has its own water purification plant.
Malaria is not a problem. I have had worse mosquito experiences in both Florida and in Dorset.
Xcaret is brilliant and good for a two day pass. There are a loads of activities there.
This hotel has a good kids club and early evening activities. Babysitting also available at extra cost.
The beach is quite safe, there are sand whales to soften any waves which makes it good for little ones learning to snorkel. You can feed the fish at knee height!

I have taken my ds twice to the Caribbean in May, the weather was perfect both times. We went to Jamaica when he was 4 and Turks and Caicos when he was 5 and would recommend either of those for small children. The flight is no problem, they sleep a bit, watch a few DVDs, have a few snacks and because they are so small have tons of space in their seats!
