Can anyone recommend a good summer residential camp for an 8 year old boy . DIfficult to get a real sense of the atmosphere of ATE , PGL and Camp Beaumont and Mill on the Brue. How do they differ
My son is sociable and sporty but has never left home before

My daughter went on a PGL holiday (horse riding) last year and absolutely loved it.
I would have no hesitation in recommending them. The accommodation was functional and practical but not luxurious, but the organisation, the activities, the care of the children and the catering were of an exceptionally high standard.

It was my daughter's first time away from home, though she had been itching to go away for a while having two older brothers who have their "own" holidays each year.

We had no problems with homesickness, they seemed very good at managing any issues, she made some lovely friends and was sad when it ended. In fact she asked if we could book a second week for her straight away she loved it so much.
Our work circumstances mean that summer holidays are rare as a family so it's nice for the children to have a break of their own during the six week school holiday.
Personally I think it's great for their independence and confidence.

The only other children's holidays I have experience of are Scripture Union which are equally good and run a wide selection of different experiences - some very sporty others more arts and crafts based. However they obviously have a heavy Christian ethos so don't suit everyone. We are a Christian family so they are to our personal taste.

This year my daughter is off on her second PGL to do multi-activities this time which covers a wide range of sports and outdoor fun. She is already counting the weeks down !!

PGL is not a cheap holiday though you can expect to pay upwards of £500 plus extras if you buy their insurances and souvenir kit bags.

To fairweatherfriend
ATE is deffo your answer.
Check out their website - google "Superweeks".
Phone the office and talk to a knowledgeable PERSON.
Read my and others posts on other threads (summercamps) on this site.
Do it, book it. You and he will not be disappointed.

Whilst I am aware that it's now December and the summer seems far far away , I came across this and thought I'd share what I know.

Additionally to being a Mum I am a teacher (primary) and have experiences of some of these summer camps through school residential's... Last year we used PGL for our year 5/6 trip and I was pretty unimpressed! The staff were average-to-poor with the children and knew very few games and songs to do with them. The ones that staff did know were either very basic or repeated by every member of staff we came across (The songs became tedious to say the least... You can imagine the bus ride home!!).

However... (mum hat back on), I have been sending my DD on ATE holidays in the last few years and have been FAR more impressed . The staff are friendly and personable and she has a wonderful time every year. I have forcefully suggested to my Headteacher that we use ATE for the next 5/6 residential ...

Hope this is helpful !

My 3 have been to a number of PGL camps over the past 6 years and their favourite is Osmington Bay. I have been very happy with the safety and security, my children love it, it isnt too intense and sporty and they will be going away again this year. There are lots of 2 for 1 deals so worth checking out if he has a friend who wants to go.
