I've had a buggy replaced by BA and a buggy replaced by Alitalia. Neither airline gave me a hard time at all. I made a report at the airport on arrival and was sent a check with a few weeks.

hi SofiaAmes

Thanks for the reply. Just bought a new one and want to bring it on hol's but wouldn't like anything to happen to it as had to wait on it's arrival from new zealand which took three weeks!!

Thanks

depends on the airline, though. Cheap airlines are not great - EasyJet made so many hurdles for us to jump through that we ended up not claiming for our broken carseat.

nicm · 01/09/2003 00:24

Thanks for that fisil we're actually going easyjet!!

It may vary according to airline but friend did not get full replacement value of her buggy (Graco Citisport) when damaged in transit by Swiss.

You may find that the buggy gets included in your weight allowance on Easyjet - it's not overgenerous anyway - might be worth checking in advance. Also in Zurich you are expected to check in an All Terrain stroller with hold luggage and not take it to gate, unlike an umbrella fold. So different rules may apply in UK airport to the destination one.

Sorry! It was partly our fault cos we flew in at bedtime so we didn't hang around to report it then, as we should have done. We then looked on the website, e-mailed the complaint and a month later got a reply saying "send your form to this address." What form? So we gave up. I'm sure you would be better behaved than us!

when we flew ryanair we had to sign a form saying that we agreed that ryanair were in no way responsible for any damage to our car seat, pushchair and travel cot (not much left after that lot!)
don't know if it was enforceable though

Tissy · 02/09/2003 15:36

we flew Ryanair at Easter with a car seat and buggy, and didn't have to sign anything- is this a new policy?

outofpractice · 03/09/2003 13:32

My expensive land rover pushchair got damaged by BA on the way to Copenhagen 2 yrs ago. The travel insurance would not pay because they said I had to claim from the airline, and I spent 2 hours waiting at Copenhagen airport for the correct forms to say what had happened, and it was a big palaver to get the claim forms from BA and I could not proceed until I got the cost of the repairs - big headache. But then the pushchair co was too busy to repair it for nearly 3 months (nightmare but brilliant for my upperbody muscular development!) and they did all the repairs for free to apologise. After that, I used to remove all the wheels and package the pushchair with duct tape and it never got damaged again.

hi tissy - I don't know if it's a new policy - it's the 1st time we flew and it was from Stansted - they all went as 'fragile ' items which was why we had to sign but we didn't have to on the way back as they just went normal cargo.

nicm · 05/09/2003 20:57

hi

thanks for all the messages. i've just booked the flights and emailed easyjet to see what they say!!

I am really sorry to say this, but we rang easyjet to get their advice on exactly the same thing. Their advice was not great (seeing as they did end up breaking our car seat and not doing anything about it).

However, with hindsight we have this advice:

We were told to ask for the seat to be marked fragile. We did ask, repeatedly, but it didn't get labelled. We didn't make a real point about it, because we thought that maybe it got labelled behind the scenes!

We would put it in a box next time. Someone else on the same flight had done this, and had no problems.

Good luck, enjoy!

PS inflight was fantastic in every way

Thanks fisil

I'm going to buy a travel bag for the buggy and pack it in that. Thanks again for the advice.

nicm, do you have a Mountain Buggy by any chance? BA just lost mine for a week, so I do have some tips. They are pretty specific to the MB case so let me know.

The buggy didn't get damaged (though the bag looks a bit rough now after only one use) even though it must have been thrown around Heathrow Airport for a week. It's pretty robust.

Can't see Easyjet coughing up for damage. If its only a flight within UK then your contents insurance might cover it. Have you still got the box it came in - I would take off the wheels and use that.

Hi bobthebaby

Thanks for the reply. i'm going easyjet from belfast to amsterdam. i have a kiwi explorer. have just ordered the travel bag. i wouldn't ming if it was a cheap stroller but after waiting for it to come from new zealand i wouldn't like anything to happen to it. also having to get it repaired would mean it having to go back to new zealand(i think).

i have thrown the box out so was hoping the travel bag would do the job if i oredred it.

thanks

nicm.

Hi nicm,

I haven't seen the bag for the kiwi explorer, but with the mountain buggy the labels kept falling into the bag, then the man at Heathrow couldn't see it, called it unlabelled baggage, put it to end of queue. They then found label then repeated ad infinitum for 5 days.

If you love the buggy, consider taking a cheap one on holiday (unless you are going on a walking holiday in which case ignore me). My Ds will be in a backpack on holiday from now on.
