Moving to Stockholm, any advice?

That's it really. DH is being transfered there and I'm a little nervous about it. We have 2 boys, aged 5 and 21 months. I know that DS1 won't start school until next August, he's just started Year 1, will this harm him?

Anyone?

hi

my friend just moved there (with her Dh's job). she also has 2 young children. they seem to be mostly enjoying it, she has a yr 1 child and a 3 year old, they are going to Swedish school and kindergarten. it sounds great. they have a forest in their garden with elks!

perhaps I can put you in touch with my friend if you are interested. her husband is working for AstraZeneca.

Fennel · 30/09/2005 19:43

oh, your specific question, your 5 year old will probably be able to go to the either free or extremely cheap kindergarten which Swedish children go to. they are supposed to be excellent.

MrsMills · 30/09/2005 19:49

Fennel, what a star! We went out there at the weekend to look at schools / kindergarten and loved what we saw. My main concern, which may sound silly, are the Swedes. The ones we have met have all been lovely, but I have heard that it is really hard to make friends.

This scares me as I will not be working, whereas DH will be with people all day, he works for Electrolux btw.

Do you think your friend would mind me asking her a zillion questions? If so, I'll CAT you my details

I moved back after 8 months in May with my 4 who are 11, 9, 8 and 1 though I taught them at home. We loved it. I have a handbook for expats (American though) and can certainly recommend some places to go. Feel free to CAT me.

swedishmum · 30/09/2005 20:12

When are you going? I have a few months left on my season tickets for Skansen and TomTits (both fab) that you're welcome to.

Tinker · 30/09/2005 20:13

TomTits? Sorry, lurking here.

katymac · 30/09/2005 20:17

My brother lives near Stockholm, he works in a great bike shop.

He really loves living there and is seeing a lady with a 7yo - she is a year younger than my dd and is already very bilingual and able to talk (in both languages) on lots of subjects - although her wirtten work is not good yet.

But my Brother says that they all leave school better educated than the UK

Hope you enjoy it - we went for a visit and it was fab

MrsMills · 30/09/2005 20:18

Swedishmum, I was secretly hoping you would be about.

We'll be moving around Christmas time, at the moment we're trying to find the right school. We quite like Sollentuna and Lidingo. Any views on areas would be soooo gratefully received.

I'll Cat you now if that's o.k.

Katymac, this is what I want to hear! I've just had lots of funny noises from other mothers in the playground and the more I read the scarier it seems.

It's picking the right area and school that's getting me down at the moment.

Tom Tits is a fab hands on science centre for kids - mine loved it. I know - we had a few laughs at the name! We used to go loads.

If you're ever in Copenhagen (we drove from Stockholm - dh's job) you HAVE to go to Experimentarium, the best kids' science place ever.

swedishmum · 30/09/2005 20:30

I'm thinking about what we found hard/enjoyed etc and have contacted a friend from US who was there at the same time as us to get her views - her ds was 2 when they arrived - as we were right in town and she was out.

Fennel · 30/09/2005 20:37

hi

Feel frel to CAT me and I will put you in touch with my friend. She's been there 3 weeks now. Her yr1 child is starting to learn to read (in Swedish), so not very different from what she'd have been doing here in yr1.
She is also a SAHM.

MrsMills · 30/09/2005 20:42

Fennel, have just cat'ed you. I'm much happier now!

We went to Tomteland (Santaland) and it was spectacular

Then we went to the Astrid Lungren (sp) place which was great

We are hoping to visit again next year (maybe at Easter)

MrsMills · 30/09/2005 20:50

Katymac, you can come for tea!

We went to the Astrid Lindgren place too last year. Isn't that the place with the storybook train? My MIL bought a 3 ft Pippi Longstocking!

MrsMills - will watch out for your CAT.

but does this mean I'll have to admit about my secret internet habits to my friend?

MrsMills · 30/09/2005 20:58

Fennel, just make something up! Perhaps AA?

Whereabouts is Electrolux based? My friend had a lot of (American) friends who lived around Sollentuna - also Djursholm is popular. She was in Nasby Park, close to Taby (where dh's office was) but they moved to Gamla Stan for the last few weeks to be where it's all happening. I guess you will have somewhere found for you - as dh was self employed though working for a big company we had to work out our own accommodation which isn't easy as there are very few rented furnished places. We spent our first 3 weeks in the Sheraton!

Thank you
