Summer school hols week in Italy, DCs 2yo and 4yo, any ideas where?

We are a family of 4 - DD (4yo) and DS (2yo) are both reasonably well travelled since I've been a SAHM for the last 3 years so we've been able to travel off peak and I've put a lot of time into getting really good deals. Am going back to work as a teacher in Jan and DD starts school in Sept so are going to be confined to school hols again (how I don't miss that) and have never really done family holidays in school holidays so don't know where to start. We usually spend about £1000 on a week away but that is not really going very far in the school hols like it does off peak, especially since DS now needs a flight ticket.

DH and I like Italy, we've been twice, once to Tuscany and once to Lake Maggiore and travelled around a lot both times, into Switzerland and down to Rome. Would like to go somewhere different, maybe further South but no idea on where or where to get good value... any ideas or experiences would be very welcome. We are sightseeing types, prefer to be doing something than sitting on a beach, mainly since DS just dives in any water he sees. We've never stayed in big family orientated hotels before since they are usually poor value outside peak times when most of the activities don't run and facilities are closed but are they worth considering or are our DCs too young for all that yet? I don't think we'd use the childcare anyway, but would enjoy the activities.

I know you have been to Tuscany before, but you might like to look at Il Girasole camp site.

It is really great - lovely area between Siena, Florence and Pisa, well run campsite, friendly staff, great pools - particularly the shallow pools of the upper campsite which are perfect for younger DC.

They offer day trips to the surrounding areas for a small price.
