Major, major strop & it's all my fault

Was booked to go to Maderia

Due to a mix up (my fault) we had to change it; Egypt & canaries were mooted as possible destinations. But maybe Egypt as Canaries weren't quite hot enough

But lady on the phone persuaded me to go for Turkey; the Turkish Riviera, Antalya

So stressed & upset about the other holiday and under a certain amount of time-pressure I agreed

I have had time to look at it all now (3 or so weeks later) & Antalya is barely 10 degrees in December

I feel so cheated & it's my own fault

I need the sun as I have SAD, DH needs the sun as he has Chronic lung disease

We could send DD by herself - she's OK

It's funny the travel insurance asked if we were going against the advise of the doctor; I said no the doctor told us to go

Have they told you when they'll get back to you@?

KatyMac · 15/12/2010 11:53

They just rang

I'd lose it all

I am so stuffed - I need to work out if its even worth going

geordieminx · 15/12/2010 11:58

How much would you loose if you scrapped it?

It's AI

I lose the whole cost - it's about £2k - I feel so upset

Just wondering about the cost of hotel already paid + what its going to cost you in extras (food if not AI) v looking on Travelzoo and seeing if you can get a really cheap AI in sharm el sheik?

Would company be willing to transfer part of your money as a goodwill gesture?

3littlefrogs · 15/12/2010 12:27

Do you not feel Madeira would have been vry hard work for someone with lung disease?? There isn't a flat piece of land on the island - it is all very steep.

I think you will love Turkey.

christmasrocks · 15/12/2010 12:28

Katy, so sorry, but maybe it wont be that bad, it`ll certainly be warmer than here, and you might end up having a lovely time, try turning the negative into a positive, hope it all goes well, let us know xxx

I went to Turkey at Christmas time back in the 70s. It wasn't cold - I was in Izmir - my geography is hopeless so don't know where that is in relation to where you are going.

I honestly think you will enjoy it. Indoor pool and spa sounds good to me too.

geordieminx · 15/12/2010 12:37

I think you are going to have to go, and make the most of it, use this opportunity to relax, and enjoy being warmer than you would be at home, nice food, spa, take plenty of books.

If you were s/c and then could end up spending another £1k on food and drink then it may have been worth sacking it, but if you are AI then its a no brainer.

I'm sure you'll have a lovely time, and just remember there is no certaintity about weather - we went to Tenerife last May and the weather was rubbish - at least you have low expectations.

I'm sure you'll be back here in a month telling us what a lovely time you have had.

Whilst it may not be bikini weather, its certainly going to be a lot warmer than here!

KatyMac · 15/12/2010 17:25

I know I have to go

But I am really worried about our health; it's really not ideal

Sorry I should have said thank you to you all for helping and not making me feel silly/pathetic

You'll still be somewhere warm. Looks like it'll be dry. Far more sunlight than in the UK. Also think you said all inclusive. So no shopping cooking cleaning. All good. Forget what might have been and now get a lonely planet and plan some fun things to do. Where we going on the 27th is the same temp we're really excited to be away from the cold and snow.

Above all have a lovely holiday.

Figgygirl · 17/12/2010 15:15

I'm sorry to hear about your dilemma - I do hope you have a good holiday after all. I have heard that the weather in Florida has been rather chilly as well, so there must be many disappointed people who hoped to get some hot sunshine there.
In future, check with the people on Trip Advisor before you book holidays - the Destination Experts and other posters on the forums will tell you the truth and advise you honestly about a destination - not say what you want to hear to sell you a holiday.

Figgygirl · 17/12/2010 15:20

If you are going to Melas Lara hotel, these are the reviews and photos on TA.

One poster there went for New Year, and said it was 65 degrees every day.

KatyMac · 18/12/2010 08:16

Thanks for being so reassuring

Just go and enjoy all the indoor facilities.

I have SAD too - do you have a portable light you can take? I have a Lumie one from Boots iirc.

I think after you get back you should complain to a Higher Power (ombudsman?) - you may not have been technically 'missold' but it sounds like you were pressurised and that is not on. I bet some clever MNers can help you draft a letter.

Alternatively - anyone around you can sell the holiday to?
