Ferry to France - do I need to book?

Hello all

We're driving to France for Christmas, and so will be taking a ferry over there.

Will I need to book it? I'd rather have the felxibility of just hopping on the next available ferry when we get to the port, rather than having to get there by a certain time.

What is the likelihood of them being full at around 7am a few days before Christmas?

Advice or experiences? Thanks!

I would book. If you turn up early they generally let you get on the next available ferry if there is space. I would have thought them unlikely to be full at that time in the morning. This is Dover I am thinking of. If you are planning one of the longer crossings, I would def book.

I would book it if I were you, especially if driving.

Much easier to guarantee a crossing, and usually cheaper to prebook. Depending on where you are going from and to there won't be that many ferries per day so you could be in for a long wait if you haven't booked.

We're going from Dover to Calais, and the ferries seem to be more or less hourly. I'd book if it were a longer crossing, but not sure for the short hop.

It will be cheaper if you book in advance, and like I said, if you get there early, they normally put you on the first available ferry. I do this trip a lot!

OK, thanks, I guess I'll book then.
