Car Sick Toddler - Help!

Stoofer · 26/09/2005 16:14

DD is 14 months old and could win competitions for throwing up during car journeys! She has a forward facing car seat and although I try to avoid taking trips just after she's eaten, going by car is becoming a very messy business - does anyone have any tips?

Second the phenergen - we used it on DD (aged 5) driving through France this summer and had not one instance of "I feel siiiiick" from the back of the car. You give it to them the night before the journey, and top up on the morning of the trip. Not sure if its okay for 14 months old - ask the chemist if you can look at a bottle.

Ooops - sorry - see the 2yr note from Aimsmum!

So it sounds like we need to keep the damp cloths and cleaning products handy until she turns two Thanks for your advice, I'll definately look into some homeopathic remedies and wrist bands to see if there's anything that can work.

Stoofer - is DD in the middle looking out between the front seats, or at the side behind one of them? Just a thought, she might feel better if she can see where the bends are taking her. I get very sicky myself if I can only see out of the side window.

It might help to encourage DD to look out the window all the time lots of eye spy .

The best one I've heard/tried is to sit on a pile of newspapers - it cuts down vibrations

Ah, remember it well! Those sounds that come from the back of the car stricking fear into your heart...

Seriously, this is what we found helped:

Get some crystallised ginger, and chop it up small. Pour on boiling water to make a tea, then leave to cool and strain. Let her take sips before the journey and during. This worked for us on an 8hour drive once.

Never let her be in a pretty dress/looking particularly cute during travelling, even if it means changing her into something nicer when you arrive. DD2's most vicious vomiting always occured in such circumstances, usually just before we saw my MIL!

Tuck a large towel around her to catch the vomit- sadly we found it was mostly a containment rather than na avoidance issue.

Hope she grows out of it. DD2 is now nearly4, and hasn't been car sick for a while ( fingers crossed)
