Manchester and Nottingham both have LARGE M & S food halls and Manchester has the world's biggest Daisy and Tom.

I am quite frankly baffled by your choice!

ParisMum · 23/09/2005 12:52

I would go for Marrakesh. It's more touristy but there's a reason for that - it's a fabulous place to visit. Casa is nice too (we have friends that live there) but is more the business centre of Morocco so once you've visited the old part of the town and the MEGA mosque that's pretty much it in my opinion.
We only spent 2 days and 1 night in Marrakesh but I completely fell in love with the place. As soon as I log off I'll go and hunt for the name of the Riad we stayed in - it was amazing, right in the Medina and not that expensive either. When are you going? Can you fit me in your luggage????

Marrakesh is old hat. Manchester's where it's at.

Oh, OK, I'm just

ParisMum · 24/09/2005 08:52

sorry ggg, I can't seem to find the name of the riad we went to. I'll keep looking though. When are you off?
As for tips on what to see....obviously you'll want to check out the souk. I'm really not a shopaholic but you just can't resist it. You might want to pay someone to guide you round it as it's a bit of a labyrinth (spelling?). We didn't spend too long as dp kept getting wound up by people trying to sell him stuff (quite agressively as it was during Ramadan). If you're going soon, you're likely to have the same experience - I loved it though, I'm a born barterer! Le quartier des tanneurs is a real eye-opener. You're bound to come across the Place Jemaa el Fna too which is really lively, but you might want to stay away from the guys with monkeys on chains. It's a bit grim.
You definitely shouldn't miss the gardens that YSL designed. They're amazing. Err, I think its called Jardin Marjorelle. Oh and the Olivette de la Ménara is really pretty too.
Sorry, that's a bit long but I'm very jealous.
Enjoy your couscous, tajine, thé à la menthe, cornes de gazelles....

Ooh ggg,had a fabulous month there before dd was born. Can't work out why the place isn't overrun with the French!

Marrakesh is the only choice.Stay in a nice riyadh, check out the souks, the Djemma el Fna which is positively mediaeval-hennaartists,water sellers and snake charmers by day, fantastic food stalls by night.

YSL's garden (Majorelle) is supposed to be lovely, although never went, Racking brains for that lovely hotel Churchill et all stayed in...
Hang on,I'll get my LP...

(I would stay close to the square though for sheer atmospherics. Won't get the pool and gardens, but one doesn't really go to Marrakech for that.)

moondog · 24/09/2005 13:46

Ah,La Mamounia is the hotel!
Supposed to be lovely but obviously prices to match.

We stayed in the Hotel Ali just off the square.
Very cheap, atmospheric, nice food, great vies of the square. Can't give you a website (how thingschange in 5 years, age of my book)but number is 444979 It's on the Rue Moulay Ismail if you have a map.

Run by a very cool Moroccan woman too.
Might be a little backpackerish for your tastes though?
We did a real mix of places all around the place from cheap and cheerful to fab boutique hotel desert set ups-all cushions, carpets and smouldering Bedouins on horseback.
Bloody great!

Love it,love it,love it. Moroccans chez eux are not like the ones in France at all.

ParisMum · 24/09/2005 13:56

god moondog, where haven't you been???!!! La Mamounia is supposed to be the dogs bits if you've got the budge for it. The riad we stayed at (I'm still trying to remember what it's called) was down some dark alley and I remember thinking that it looked a bit dodgy but I was amazed how safe the place is....wandering around after dark down alleys isn't normally my thing, by the way.

Who was the MN who once started with a post; "I was in South America over the weekend"
Classic

When are you going?

SenoraPostrophe · 25/09/2005 15:32

Yeah - Casablanca is a hole. Go to Marrakesh.

If you get time, get a taxi over the mountains to terroudant - there's a fantastic 5 star hotel in a casbah there (about 30 quid a night when we went) and a very nice journey with goats in trees.

morocco · 25/09/2005 15:40
