Driving in Spain. Am I right to be gibbering at thought?

I'm scared. I've managed to get away with not driving on the other side of the road for my entire 37.5 years - until now.

We're arriving in the evening, picking up our car and have a 2 hour drive from there to our destination (almost all motorway).

Any top tips to stem the gibbers?

Personally I find motorway driving the least stressful. The rules are generally the same, it's just that everything is on the other side.

When you see a 'Cambio de sentido' sign, it is an exit that will allow you to change directions on the motorway - i.e. come off, drive beneath the motorway and enter back on in the opposite direction.

Roundabouts follow the same rules as over here, too.

Good luck

mum2girls - that's just the sort of post I was hoping for! Thank you

Scary as jeff imo. When we went to Majorca in July we hired a car which DH drove (i refused), he has driven abroad before and has been a driver for 20 years and he still nearly took the side off the hire car about 6 times ! His spatial awareness went to pot and so he was forever drifting over into the other lanes . Also the roundabouts were give way to the left rather than the right because you go around them in the 'wrong' direction. Confused ? You will be

I drove in Majorca for the first time this year (and I'm 42!). It was fine - even managed some reverse parking and a trip up the mountain on a very narrow road with a sheer drop at the side! Dh looked a bit green though

I've passenged in Majorca and found it absolutely hair-raising (sheer drops at side of road)

I'm driving from Valencia down to Moraira (half way to Alicante)

I'm sure once you've been in the car for half an hour or so, you'll be fine .

I definitely found it less nervewracking driving than being a passenger. But than dh usually drives a fire engine and forgets when he's in the car, he hasn't got a blue light and a siren warning folks he's on the road!

Just take things steady when you first get in the car and get your bearings.

I don't find it any bother driving abroad, the problem comes when I get home, can never remember which side i'm meant to be on

we went to granada and the driving was total hell. avoid granada! other than that it was ok.

yoyo · 22/09/2005 21:12

I thought the motorway signs were really clear - lots of notice for exits. More places to stop to find your bearings too.

I have done Valencia to Denia SD. The motorway is a Toll road - you take a ticket on entry and pay on exit. They accept credit cards if you have no cash. The motorway around Valencia is free though, as you come out of the suburbs, you reach the first toll booth. Take time to suss out the controls/lights/wipers etc on the car before you start to drive. Take it steady on leaving the airport too, as soon as you get onto the motorway, it is plain sailing. You will need your wits about you once you reach your exit though.
Enjoy your holiday!

Am still cacking pants about it but thanks for that gingerbear!
