I'm told Malta is over 40 degrees in August. it's quite a windy country as it's so small so it might be quite nice. We had a fab time there in April but could have done wtih it being a bit warmer, though it was a darn sight better than here at any time this year!

That's true

We had our honeymoon there & it was the first Easter in living memory they had had rain

it will be very hot - but then cyprus will be then as well won't it. most people speak english, the capital is worth a visit - lots of very old buildings and madina i think its called. there aren't that many sandy beaches. you could also try a trip to gozo - an island next door, which is less touristy. i seem to remember they drive on the same side of the road as us.

i quite liked it when i went about 20 years ago, but haven't been back (which probably says something). seem to remember the people were nice - think its something to do with the war.

I've been several times and we went to Gozo on our honeymoon.

I really love it there. Loads to see. Valetta and Mdina are lovely. The buses are cheap and go all over the island. There are lots of little quaint fishing villages etc to see.

As someone said there aren't many sandy beaches but although we love the sea neither of us is keen on lazing on the beach all day so it didn't make any difference to us. It is great for diving (haven't tried it myself) but know others who loved it.

I've also been to Cyprus. We went in Sept. and we staying with a friend in Nicosia. I found the heat almost unbearable in the city but better around the island. I loved the food in Cyprus and we had a great day out in the mountains.

Eeek maybe I better go closer to home

We went this yr in the last week of July/first week of August. Weather was perfect, 30 degrees every day, but we were told its often hotter. I kept an eye on the weather there for the rest of August and it stayed at the same temps we had.

Valetta is amazing and is a UNESCO heritage site. We stayed in the Westin in St Julians which was lovely and always had a cool breeze outside. We did a daytrip to Gozo, which is much sleepier and quiet and has the beaches, although Malta also has lovely beaches further north up the cost from St Julians.

Finally, as the history lesson, Malta is absolutely fascinating due to where it is and how its been strategically important for centuries. i learnt a lot. The Maltese in general were lovely, it was much more english than i was expecting - theres M&S and Next and Debenhams etc there but its not 'Little Britain' either.

We really enjoyed it.

In August it is like an incinerator. I remember walking out of the hotel at 5.00 pm and getting eactly the same feeling as when you open the oven door.

You will not be able to go anywhere or do anything with DCs except very early morning.

Fantastic place though and nicer than Cyprus which is similarly hot.

KatyMac · 26/11/2010 20:17

That will be too hot for me

I wonder where we should go; any ideas

Everywhere in southern europe in August is very hot. As i said though, we were lucky and it wasnt that hot in Malta when we were there in August.

If you don't like heat, go to Scandanavia, or do a mountain holiday in the Alps in France, Austria, Italy or southern Germany.

In the mountains it is much more changeable, you will get 2-3 hot days punctuated by a thunder and rain storm. But there are beautiful lakes and tons of things to do if you don't want to lie on the beach or by the pool and the weather does not ruin a holiday.

KatyMac · 28/11/2010 00:14

I guess so

I like between 25 & 30 but over 30 is way too hot for me

I am tied to travelling by either Cosmos or Siblu (Tesco vouchers)
