Any one spent a few days there? Enjoyable/interesting?
Is much English spoken if necessary?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Well, I'm Polish so I might be a bit biased...but it's lovely. Beautiful, plenty of sightseeing to do, lots of great restaurants, jazz bars etc. Plenty of students and also lots of tourists, so English shouldn't be a problem (bar older people).

winnybella · 21/11/2010 14:48

Oh, yes, Oswiecim (Auschwitz)- a must.

lal123 · 21/11/2010 14:49

we were there a few years ago - beautiful city and I would love to go back. Plenty of english spoken, you should get by fine.

I went for a long weekend a few years ago. Lovely place, but I went in summer, and to be honest, I think I'd only return in good weather. You need to be able to walk around a fair bit to get a good sense of the place, and it would be a shame to miss out on the (touristique, but nice) pavement cafe scene.

Auschwitz def worth the coach trip, but not for the faint hearted. I didn't feel like a slap up dinner and drinks afterwards, put it that way.

Dolittlest- summer's great, but it's really beautiful in winter- we almost always get lots of snow. Nothing like a good walk followed by a shot of wisniowka or krupnik!

BBC had an article on Krakow few days ago

Gosh, thank you all so much for speedy replies.

You have convinced me;we are going to go for it.

Thanks for the reassurance about English being spoken. However, to be safe...

Winnybella, could you possibly write me the polish for
" I have a serious nut allergy and can't eat any food which contains any type of nut"?

Jestem uczulona na orzechy i nie wolno mi jesc zadnych potraw z jakimikolwiek orzechami.

winnybella · 21/11/2010 15:54

or better:

Jestem bardzo uczulona na wszystkie rodzaje orzechow i nie wolno mi jesc potraw ktore je zawieraja.

You might want to write it on a piece of paper and show it to the waiter as the pronounciation is quite complicated.

I went there about 18mths ago and had a lovely time Smile

We were lucky and had gorgeous weather too...

omnishambles · 21/11/2010 16:08

It is lovely but dont go in February. My god its cold then...

MayCanary · 21/11/2010 16:14

I was lusting after a hot chocolate at Wedel on the Rynek (main square) earlier today. Good excuse to go in Winter!

wolfbrother · 21/11/2010 16:48

Thank you all so much-especially Winnybella for the polish help!

Brilliant place. Can't wait to go again!

Gay40 · 21/11/2010 16:55

The request for the tanslation has made me piss my pants laughing, though

reptile · 22/11/2010 20:34

I prefered Gdansk, as Krakow is very touristy. Also, if, like me, you don't fancy Auschwitz as a trip, the salt mines are really interesting.
