Are we mad? Scotland in winter........

beebuzzer · 15/11/2010 20:17

We have just booked a holiday in Scotland on the west coast (Dumfries and Galloway) in what looks like a pretty remote area in December.

Thinking about it now I'm not so sure!
What if we get snowed in or something?
Never been to Scotland before so a bit worried now!

Can someone please console me and say it's going to be ok?

Ensure you pack thermals. I hope the place has fully included central heating Hmm

RedRosie · 15/11/2010 20:22

Sounds lovely.

Take warm clothes and lots of food.

The West coast is the warmest.

Log fires!

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 15/11/2010 20:22

The snow doesn't usually arrive till March, though flooding is a possibility. D&G is a fantastically beautiful part of the country, though, lots of small towns with Real Shops, and markets on Saturdays. Will you be stargazing in the Forest Park? It has a Dark Skies award. :)

Habbibu · 15/11/2010 20:22

We live in Fife, and went to D&G at New Year last year. It was fab. Wrap up warm, make sure you've all got decent boots and have a ball. It's a lovely part of the country, lots to do and you'll have a brilliant time.

ElizabethWakefield · 15/11/2010 20:23

You know people live in Scotland during the winter, yeah?? Grin

It will be totally fine! Have fun!

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 15/11/2010 20:23

(PS, millions of us live in Scotland all year round, and survive! Grin)

GrimmaTheNome · 15/11/2010 20:26

ooh, I want to go there!

D&G is relatively warm thanks to the Gulf Stream, I bet Yorkshire is colder!

SparklyJules · 15/11/2010 20:35

Are you mad?!

It's a lovely place to visit. Just weatherproof yourselves and remember the days will be short.

Find a good pub and you'll be fine!

cantdecidewhattodo · 15/11/2010 20:50

I think Dumfries has a relatively mild climate so unlikely to get snowed in.

get thiose log fires going! Smile

Me and DH went to the west highlands in November years back. Was REALLY cold but lovely scenery. If you wrap up warm it can be lovely.

beebuzzer · 15/11/2010 20:56

Thanks very much everyone. Feel much better now! Log fires and stargazing sounds awesome too. I know lots of you tough scots can deal with it so will have to toughen up a bit. :)
Our one year old daughter will too although she does prefer the cool to the warmer climate!

When in December are you visiting?

"The Geminids Meteor Shower peaks around the 13th December and is widely known as the best in the year. It can produce up to 60 ? 80 meteors per hour, but as with all such meteor showers you can never tell until it actually happens.
Total Lunar eclipse, December 21st."

(PS, shagging in front of an open fire is much over-rated. You burn on the side next to the fire (and worry about sparks) and freeze on t'other because of the draught that feeds the flame. HTH.Grin)

beebuzzer · 15/11/2010 21:11

PML oldlady - I will remember that! We always had an open fire when we were young and its lovely at christmas.

We will be going on the 11th for a week.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 15/11/2010 21:16

Fantastic, you'll get the meteor shower then! (If the skies are clear enough...) Hope you have a lovely holiday anyway, and enjoy that part of the country. :) Welcome to Scotland.

beebuzzer · 15/11/2010 21:37

Thanks very much Oldlady. :)

DH much prefers Scotland outside of summer as he can't stand the midges.

Though he could probably find flies in the Arctic! Grin

geordieminx · 16/11/2010 21:32

There is a fab chocolate factory that do tours and work shops

beebuzzer · 17/11/2010 09:26

Thanks cant and Geordie. Will have to share my experiences when I get back!

beebuzzer · 17/11/2010 09:49

OP posts:
CerealOffender · 17/11/2010 12:37

beebuzzer · 17/11/2010 13:04
