the cottage i wen tto this summer had stair gates provided free of charge needed a goat guard really as they were rather too friendly! saw one in another residents car boot.

On the 'shoes off' issue - a dissenting voice here. Personaly it would make me feel very inhibited and like I couldn't feel 'at home' on holiday. I would do it but wouldn't like it. I suspect a LOT of people wouldn't bother though - its quite hard to police a large group of children and adults piling in after a day out in the country....in my experience even if you give people very clear instructions they don't always follow them!! (we have a second house that friends and family use, so have some experience of this. I'm gratified to find that most of your wishes are fulfilled by our place - even the pub next door )
I suggest a swirly carpet and a good hoover instead

Hi Ladies, all this is reeeeally great, thanks.

Yes you've found out my secret, we have bought somewhere to rent as a holiday home next year. It is brand new but looks like a cottage, it is being carpetted for us in a light brownish shade so I was just wondering what people thought of the shoes off idea.

It is all a bit scary at the moment as we need some sort of a management company etc.

The other ideas are great and some I wouldn't have thought of like the step stool and spare light bulbs etc. Keep it coming if you think of anything else.
