Do 4 year olds still need a buggy?

My DS is 3 and a bit and still falls asleep after lunch in the buggy if wer'e out for the day. Will this still happen at 4 (having another baby and am wondering if I can avoid the double buggy thing!)

DHW will your ds be in school? If so then that will get him used to no sleep.

p.s. hows the doppler going?

Well, all I can give you is how dd was - and she flatly refused to go anywhere near the buggy from the time she was 2.5 (although had to for longer distances), and we had ditched it completely by the time she was 3. She has walked everywhere perfectly happily (if a little slower than I would have liked) since then, she's now 4 years 4 months.

Furball · 14/09/2005 19:42

WWB - My ds is/was exactly the same. He'll walk me off me feet anyday.

KBear · 14/09/2005 19:48

My DS falls asleep in the car all the time (he's 4 on Sunday) so if I didn't have the buggy I'd have to wake him up to take him round the school and he'd be a grump or carry him - NO WAY. So yes, still use the buggy sometimes.

Nemo - the doppler is amazing. A few times heard nothing other than my heartbeat though. But I'm refusing to stress about it! Have heard it since. My DS loves hearing it. definately a good idea (although the obstetrian obviously thought I was completely barmy for having one!)

Agree with MaloryTowers sling idea - I would be v reluctant to fork out on a double buggy when your oldest is 4. Having said that, a lot depends on how much you walk. We don't have a car and walk/bus everywhere - ds is now nearly four and is pretty happy with walking everywhere but does sneak into dd's buggy (2) buggy for a quick ride when dd wants to wander.

I'm not going to say it again

BUT I'VE GOT A TANDEM PRAM FOR SALE £30 SE London - please someone - take it away!

I honestly can't remember the last time ds1 went in a buggy. He's 4.5 now. It's certainly at least a year because ds3 came along so he and ds2 occupied the buggy!

milosmum · 14/09/2005 19:53

sorry- cant really give any advice on that. My Ds (rather likes WWBs) would go near a buggy from 2years. hes walked everywhere since- not a complaint in sight.

Mallarky · 14/09/2005 19:56

DD is now four and hasn't used a buggy on a regular basis for a year. The only time now is when were on holiday where it's invaluble for sleeps during and late nights!

Mallarky · 14/09/2005 19:57

oops should read sleeps during day!

ds was 3 yrs 5 moths when dd was born. We bought a Kiddiboard but only used it about 10 times. The only time he used a buggy after she was born was once when he was poorly (dd was in a Baby Bjorn so you could carry one wth you in case of emergency). tbh it never crossed my mind to consider a double at that age.

dd is now 4 and hasn't used the buggy on a regular basis for well over year and wouldn't nap in it now. Did take it on holiday last year but only used it to speed up trips to the beach so uncertain whether to bother taking it again.

I know a few friends whose kids are at reception and having to still use buggys to get them home as theya re shattered. I think it depends on your child and how exhausted they get. My DS goes in the buggy occasionally and he is nearly 4, especially if he is mega tired or coming down with something.
