Hi, our DD1 will be travelling from Barcelona (I'll bring her there from London) to NY and through Washington DC to Ohio with her Spanish grandparents soon (to see her aunt and cousins), and I just realised that it might be more difficult than first thought.

Never mind the fact that her grandparents don't speak English and she doesn't speak much Spanish (how would this look at the immigration desk..), a five year old DD1 has a Finnish passport and will be travelling without parents with two Spanish citizens. What kind of documents does she need with her? I heard somewhere that we should write a letter to all the airlines involved, but how would they know it's authentic..?

DD1 is really excited about the trip, but obviously I'm worried sick about it all and need to do everything possible to make sure they are not turned back from the JFK airport. I would be grateful for any advice. Thanks!!

We had experience of this (although not quite as complicated) this summer.

I was on holiday with a group of friends, one of which had her nephew with her (we flew from scotland to USA) The boys mum provided a letter with contact details, and the boy was asked who it was he was travelling with and if he was happy?! and that was all. I think if you provide a letter then it should be ok.

Notarised letter from solicitor signed by both parents would certainly be worth obtaining.
