Do you mean places to stay or touristy things?

sykes · 12/09/2005 11:48

Hi, Anorack, I've spent quite a few weeks out there in the past. I loved it - wonderful place. Extremely easy to get around etc, the only thing I hated was the humoidity - my hair went frizzy. There are loads of walkways etc and the taxis are all air-conditioned so it's not too much of a problem. What advice are you lookiing for?

zippitippitoes · 12/09/2005 11:50

Was it accommodation you wanted recommending?

RTKangaMummy · 12/09/2005 11:52

RTKangaMummy · 12/09/2005 11:53

anorak · 12/09/2005 12:00

Hello all.

He's staying at the Shangri-la Island, all paid for by the company

I was thinking of restaurants, things to do and see, shopping, etc.

Ifr he goes to market he should be very careful about buying silks cos some of them are not real

When we were there we went to visit friends live there and are chinese and so they took us to market

And so she spoke to the stall holders and they told her the real silks rather than the fake ones iyswim

we went on the boats {forgotten their names} round the harbour

we went to the chinese border {this was in 1994- so before the chinese took it over}

RTKangaMummy · 12/09/2005 12:10

HK is deffo brill

we went to the beach as well, and went to real chinese restaurant with these friends and we had said we would eat anything apart from Chicken claws

SO anyway they took us to this posh restuarant, they gave us this food with chicken fat {which was the best bit in their opinion}

So they gave lots of this fat to us and I chewed and chewed but couldn't swallow it

so stay away from chicken fat or claws

we went to raodside kiosk and so I just chose a saltana cake so was sure it didn't have ab=ny weird meat in

anorak · 12/09/2005 12:11

My dh would prefer the chicken claws to the sultana cake I fear. He is fearless about meat but won't touch dried fruit!

Aberdeen Harbour - People live on boats in harbour, take a boat ride and some good restaurants.
Victoria Peak - funicular train ride up to top - great views
Ferry to Lamma Island - pretty island, good beach??
Causeway Bay and Stanley Market for shopping

top 10 in HK from Manchester Evening News

RTKangaMummy · 12/09/2005 12:20

oooh yes forgot victorisa peak

but can by misty there

ALso the polution is pretty bad in HK

RTKangaMummy · 12/09/2005 12:21

here is a site full of facts

lou33 · 12/09/2005 13:02

I'd love to go back, i lived there as a kid. I would stuff my face with Dragon's Beard Candy and shop the whole time.

jaqphil · 12/09/2005 17:42

I worked there for four years through the handover and totally loved it.

Definitely the Star Ferry across the harbour, Victoria Peak, Stanley Market, Aberdeen to see the junks and eat in the Jumbo floating restaurant, Nathan Road shopping, Big Buddha on Lantau Island. Lamma Island is good as there are still real fisherpeople working and living despite the expat-geared bars and cafes. Take the walk over to the other side (about an hour), eat in the Lamma Hilton and catch the ferry back from there.

For dressing up have drinks in Felix, the Stark bar, at the top of the Penninsula in Kowloon, or the bar next to the Petrus in the Island Shangri-La.

Its such a great place, have a whale of a time!

Saw on last night's news that Disneyland Hong Kong has just opened!!!
If you get fed up of oriental culture, you could always go there for a good bit of American culture!

anorak · 14/09/2005 12:20

Just want to say thanks everyone for these hints. DH had a read of this last night and looked at the links too.

I wish I was going too!
