RYANAIR hand baggage question

Holymoly321 · 13/10/2010 09:48

Hi ladies, we're flying with Ryanair to Gran Canaria on Friday but we're only taking hand luggage (it's a girls only weekend!). I understand that we can only take one piece of luggage on board weighing 10kg, but what if we buy stuff after checking in but before boarding, say books in WHSmith, or a sandwich, bottle of water etc? Are we not allowed to take these on in a seperate carrier bag or do they all have to fit into our little carryon suitcase? Thanks

Everything you carry on to the plane has to fit in to that one carryon suitcase! Handbag, things bought after check in, everything!

Well, they tell you that everything has to fit in the bag...so in theory, they can stop you at the actual gate, and make you stuff everything in. I have to say, that's never happened to me, and I usually get loads of stuff from WHS/Boots etc once I've gone through.

BLimey, Ryanair are unbelievable! How the hell are you meant to squeeze extra stuff into your onboard suitcase? An extra carrier is nothing is it really? Argh! Guess I'll just have to starve on the plane (refuse to pay for rip off Ryanair plane food) and squeeze a tiny book into my bag!

Bear in mind they won't weigh the bag unless it looks too big. Mine usually weighs nearer 20k than 10 but I pretend it's really light so they don't suspect anything!

What about a hat? Was going to 'wear' my cowboy sun hat atvthe airport as therecis no way it's going to fit in my bag. Think itllnbe ok or will they make me it behind if bits nit in my case?

you can wear your hat, your coat etc, but depending on picky staff they will make you put your 'everything else' in the case.

I flew from stansted to Prestwick at the weekend and the London staff were fine, the PRestwick staff weighed my case and made me stuff it in the 'does it fit?' thingy? they were making people remove stuff and put things in.

If I were you I would bring a book you want to read with you. I noticed the size of the paperbacks were larger than average and more expensive too.

saucysausage, it's not the weight you have to be worried about. It's whether it fits in the little frame they have at the boarding gate. I got caught on a flight with them to Manchester with a bag that weighed only about 5kgs but the outside pocket on it meant it wouldn't fit in the cage-device. ?35 on the spot to check it in or I couldn't board! Staff member immediately whisked my boarding card out of my hand. No discussion, no argument, pay up or sling your hook. Staff member was obnoxious and thinking only in terms of her commission.

My friend flew with them a few weeks ago with 3 small kids and his wife and they even made the kids put their little bags in the frame. They availed of the opportunity to do the entire queue at the gate because there was a delay with the incoming flight. Lots of extra revenue for them & commission for the staff.

And absolutely everything has to fit in the one bag - your handbag, duty free purchases etc. Not sure about a book and obviously you can wear your coat!

I would suggest checking the allowable dimensions on their site & make sure your bag conforms. I know when I first bought my bag, it was within the requirements but they've reduced them since then.

Enjoy your trip.

Ooh, Granard, sorry to hear about your exp - but thanks for flagging it up! Will get out the tape measure and double check it all!

Story from a friend of mine:

"If you get a stroppy person on the gate" - she did and as one of the last to board (Dublin - Stansted) on a full flight, they were being particularly stroppy as they were running out of room on board. They made the last three people try their bags in the tester and none of them fitted. The first two seemed happy to check their baggage and pay the £30 fee, my friend refused. Stand off at the gate.

"They can't stop you wearing anything" indeed they can't. Her solution was to take her large pink fluffy dressing gown out of her bag (which now fitted), wear it across the tarmac and to board the plan (to a round of applause. And put it back in her bag once she was on board.

Flew from Leeds Bradford on Monday with Ryanair, and they made everybody put their bag into the cage. One woman put it in but had a hell of job getting it out again, so they said it didn't fit comfortably so she would have to pay.

When I flew from Nantes on the same flight they didn't check anybodies bag and there were loads of people with 2 bags.
