Flying to Australia on own- with 2 yr old and newborn!

Hi, I am due to fly to Perth stopping in KL on my own with my 2.5 yr old and newborn. My husband is following a few weeks later. Has anyone ever done a similar flight on their own? Just after some practical tips really, not too concerned about the newborn, more worried about the toddler causing chaos! I have flown a few times on my own to and from australia with the toddler but have never juggled two before and a little nervous! The newborn will be breastfed so wont need bottles at least. Any tips greatly appreciated!!!

his own bag with lots and lots and lots of entertaining stuff. Hopefully he'll sleep for some of the journey so maybe a new pair of pajamas and his favourite sleeping with toy.

one tip I have from doing this flight myself with two is to arrange with your airline for someone to help you at Perth to collect you baggage and get through customs. The flight should be ok with TV and air hosts to help out, its arriving at the other side when all three of you will be tired that will be the trouble. If you ring your airline and request help at the end they should be able to do it and it will make it so much better!

Thats a great tip smileandsun! As I have landed in perth with my daughter and relied on strangers to get the baggage off when she was in a sling. Yes, Ive got a dvd player organised with new wiggles dvds which will keep her sedated for ages!!! Grin I am going to just use bribery (presents/biscuist etc) for the 20 hours just to get through it!!! Oh, and I have a 10pm flight leaving heathrow so hopefully she will sleep most of the way! Thanks everyone for all the good ideas! Better to be prepared for the worse....

you have great attitude so would be fine! i flied with 2 but mine was older than yours. the key is to keep your older one happy as you'd be holding/feeding the baby so the litte one would be fine. lots of briberies and praises! try to get her to nap/sleep as when she is over tired it's no fun. also the first row where there is a little basinet for your baby may not work as well, mine didn't use it at all -- the elbow rest in between the seat can't go up. my 3 years old did lie on the seat and napped. she can't get comfortable and i let her napped on the floor which was against the safety policy.

I agree with getting the airline to help as I recently struggled with luggage, 18 month old and pregnant belly!
We always take a mini laptop loaded with downloaded Cbeebies programmes as well as crayons, books etc.
Oh and best thing I ever used with my newborn on flights was a baby carrier. Can't recommend it highly enough!

Have a great trip!

Some airlines refuse to allow you to fly with more then one small child. In the case of an emergency you could not deal effectively with your own safety and that of your two children.
