Top Tips for Flying with a 2/3 year old!

We're flying to Perth on Friday - transitting through Singapore so its going to be a hell of a journey!

Grateful for any advice - last flew longhaul with him when he was 13 months and Mumsnet was a mine of information!

Marking my place... Flying to India with 2 year old (nothing like your feat!), last time I flew longhaul with her was 13 months too.

Are you flying day time or night?

If night he will hopefully sleep most of it. If day then you'll be relying on the TV, small pressies and stickers, games etc.

Make sure you have ordered children's meals.

How long are you transitting through Singapore? They have a pool that you can use.

It's never as bad as you think. Don't worry about it.

We've just moved back to the UK from Perth. You are going to get some fabulous weather!

PDR · 29/09/2010 20:03

We are flying during the day :(

We only have 1hr 45mins in Singapore so pool probably not an option (though good to know - how fab!)

Ordered kids meal and saved up 3 Cbeebies magazines with associated free gifts and stickers Grin

Have informed DH that as I am 20weeks pg - he is not going to drink booze and watch TV the whole way!

You just need to go with it. It will be hard but if you have a portable DVD player take it with some favourite movies or cartoons. Sometimes the inflight stuff isn't suitable for a toddler.

Bribe with chocolate and crisps and be prepared to walk up and down the aisle lots!

In Singapore let him walk to try and tire him out a bit.

Remember, it's only 17 hours.

geordieminx · 30/09/2010 11:54

dvd player, new books, magazines, 99p pack of plasticine from Tesco, colouring pencils and paper, a roll of selotape, sticker book.

iskra · 30/09/2010 12:02

what's the difference between taking a laptop & a DVD player? We are taking laptop with us anyway because we need it at our destination, can't figure out what DVD player does differently that means I should get it for DD? But am a luddite.

One thing i read on here that worked for us on an 11hr flight was to wrap up small new items/toys, and every hour or so, or when you had worn every last bit of interest out of the previous toy, get one more new toy or item out of your bag and so on. Worked well for us. Those mini/pocket libraries of 5 books in a little box were very useful too.

Mini characters/figures eg Night Garden ones, stickers, aquadraw, mini puzzle things and yes the portable dvd player, just for them, feels very grown up! Lots of snacks and DS blanket, etc. It will be ok!

geordieminx · 30/09/2010 13:50

No difference in that they will both play dvd's.

Big difference in that you would probably struggle to balance a laptop on the tray on the back of the seat, whereas a portable dvd will sit on there perfectly, or be able to be on toddlers knee.

Do you have a seat booked for him? Please say you have. Grin

We also got a fab little cooking set (pot, hob, spoons etc) which all fitted in a tiny bag - long long time ago, so not sure where you'd get one now, and kept DD busy for hours. Would second the dvd player, and even an i-pod with a couple of audio books.

geordieminx · 30/09/2010 14:00

I bought an ipad before we went away last time Blush

Best £500 I have ever spent Grin

I'd echo taking as many little gifts that are new (have you got time to go to pound shop or somewhere similar to stock up on cheap stuff that can be chucked).

Stuff that worked well for us were tonnes & tionnes of stickers, small books, colour stuff - the colour wonder books are great, small cars, all placed in party bags & brought out every hour or so. Let him chose some magazines at the airport & maybe a small gift. Playdough or plasticine would be good but not 100% sure if you can take them onboard now so you could check! Dvd player or laptop that plays dvds is great but battery power is short so maybe just use this as emergency bribery & try to recharge it in Singapore for the next leg of the journey. (dvd player also handy if you so out for meals in Perth to keep him occupied) Also keep a stash of new stuff for the Singapore-Perth leg. If he has a favourite toy, let him take that too.

Make sure you pack some calpol sachets in hand luggage in case he's unwell, change of clothes for him & at least a change of top for you & DH (just incase he's sick) & a cup with a straw so he can have a drink on take off & landing to help his ears (or let him have sweets if he has them!).

Take plenty snacks (raisins, breadsticks, fruitflakes, fruit, white choc, crisps & things he maybe doesn't ususally have as bribery!) Don't rely on the airline child meal cos not always too pleasant & at least if he doesn't like it, you know he'll still have something to eat.

If you'll be doing any of the journey when it's his bedtime & you want him to sleep, try to get him changed into pj's so he knows it's sleep time.

Do you have a trunki that you can pack his stuff in? They're great for holding their stuff but also on the layover if he's tired, you'll be able to wheel him through the terminal on it & if he's not tired he'll be able to zoom around on it!

I'm sure he'll bee fine & often the kids are better behaved than some of the adults & just remember it is only 17 hours & you'll never see the people around you again.

Oh, & have fun!

PDR · 30/09/2010 14:47

Thanks so much everyone!

Have been into town and got a few bits including:

Small plastic farm animals from ELC - going to wrap them up individually later.

Sticker book

4 mini books

Colour Wonder set

Zingzillas banana phone type toy which makes noise but not loud so doubt will disturb other passangers.

Lots of assorted snacks and a new cup.

Geordie yes he has his own seat and we are taking the CARES harness for him. Didn't want to take car seat as apparently UK ones do not meet Aussie standards so have hired one instead.

DH is being an arse and refusing to take portable DVD player as its one which goes in the car and then has a stand for using out of the car and he thinks its "his" and is being all precious about it (he will regret this!). I might be able to get one at Currys or somewhere by tomorrow but if not will have to do without.

No Trunki either but have Maclaren pushchair which we will take to the ramp and hopefully will get that back in Singapore for him to sit in. Bloody hope so as I have quite a bad back at the moment and a growing bump so will not be carrying DS anywhere!!!!

geordieminx · 30/09/2010 15:34

Tesco and asda and Argos sell them for less than £50

fedupwithdeployment · 30/09/2010 15:50

The Trunki (we have Gruffallos) was the best investment...and your DS is perfect age for it. I would thoroughly recommend them.

BadgersArse · 30/09/2010 15:50

if you look on the tips section there is stuff there

this topic is dont twice a day every day

PDR · 30/09/2010 17:49

Got DVD player which claims to have 3 hrs battery life :-)

Sorry if l have repeated anything here!!!

OP posts:
squeaver · 30/09/2010 17:54

Yes loads of tips elsewhere on this here and elsewhere.

But just wanted to say flying during the day is fine if it means you arrive there in the evening (as we did in Sydney when dd was 2.5). Everyone gets over the jet lag much more quickly.

On the DVD player - I think you can buy battery packs and check with your airline, you might be able to plug it in.

geordieminx · 30/09/2010 19:06

Leave the DVD player until you are really desperate Grin

PDR · 30/09/2010 21:04

Ok thanks ladies!

Just "checked-in" online :)
