Baby passport picture

In a bit of a tiz over these. Have a 8 week old baby. Got two lovely pics, eyes open, mouth closed, but he takes up about 80% of the background. Can't load them to show you at present because effing camera software refusing to acknowledge camera chip (I'll need to reboot).

How have you got on with baby passport pic acceptability? Any words of wisdom for me please?
My countersignatory is a mate who is an insanely busy barrister, due here to two hours. So still have time to whip a few more into snappy snaps. Possibly.

Any experience advice greatly appreciated. xx

DS's first passport photo was taken at 2 months, he was in the bath! Eyes open, big grin, no hat (obviously). Had no problem with that. I don't think they care too much with babies TBH because one month later they've changed already, when DS was still using it at 5 years old it just made the passport patrol people laugh. Yours sounds fine to me.

LIZS · 06/09/2005 09:01

Sounds ok. dd is just a dot in hers (less than 3 weeks old) and you can see my hand draped in a muslin holding her up in the booth. btw you wouldn't recognise her from it 4 years on !

merryberry · 06/09/2005 09:03

reassuring! the idea of a dot and the wet and wild pics are nice

thank you

My first ds1 babyphoto is so pale you can hardly see him from the white background but was accepted-they don't really care about babies as they all do look the same almost apart from colour!

Kelly1978 · 06/09/2005 09:07

I had to do these not so logn ago - were a total nightmare. I thibnk you've doen really well to get eyes open and mouth shut - I couldn't even manage that and mine were passed.

Springchicken · 06/09/2005 09:11

The only thing with a baby picture is that their eyes are open. DD has just had hers done and process so now her passport has a lovely piccie of her with a big cheesy grin.

As long as you can see their eyes and no body parts of anybody else it will be fine.

merryberry · 06/09/2005 09:12

OK, we're going with what we have and fingers crossed. Thank you all verymuch for such prompt and helpful advice. xx

would like to see ours? just had one done for my dd when she was 8 weeks?

serenity · 06/09/2005 09:42

I was shocked when DDs picture was accepted too. When I had DSs done they still used the actual photo, by the time DDs was done they just printed the image directly onto the passport page. All you can see in her passport is a little shock of dark hair and two little eyes, the rest was so pale that it didn't actually print onto the paper.

swedishmum · 06/09/2005 10:06

I don't think even I would recognise dd from her picture - she was about 10 days and it didn't even look like her when we first went abroad when she was 6 weeks! Her eyes are open but that's about it. She's 18 months now and looks totally different!
I'm sure yours will be absolutely fine.

MarsLady · 06/09/2005 10:14

DD2's first passport was funny. She was wide awake and smiley whilst waiting to get her photo done. Held her up in the booth, and she fell asleep. Her photo was her with my hands around her holding her up. She was weeks old. It passed and we recently changed it.

serenity · 06/09/2005 10:14

They don't really look at the pictures anyway. My DSis took DSs to Eurodisney last february, DS2 was almost 5 (his passport ran out in July), and the picture inside was taken when he was 2 weeks old. His passport could have belonged to anyone. I was so worried that they would just laugh in her face (she has a different surname, she's blonde and DS2 is very dark and greek) that I hung around Waterloo clutching my phone incase I had to go and rescue her from changes of kidnapping

serenity · 06/09/2005 10:15

or even 'charges'

saadia · 06/09/2005 10:34

my ds also came out very pale looking in his passport photo, taken at 18mths, was also grinning from ear to ear as the girl who took the pic was v pretty. They accepted it, even though it says the photographee should not be smiling.

lummox · 06/09/2005 10:45

ds was five weeks when we did his.

If you use the Post Office checking system (costs about £6 I think) they check every part of the application including whether the photo is within the guidelines.

So at least you know straight away whether the photo is acceptable rather than wasting time sending it off and getting it back.

ds took up almost all the picture in ours (it was the only way to get my hand out of the picture) and we were quite surprised that it was accepted.

Dophus · 06/09/2005 10:50

As iothers have said - they're not too worried. Mine took up most of the photo.

merryberry · 06/09/2005 10:58

wow loads more reassurance, thank you all.

Hello - you can use a website such as www.picturelizard.co.uk or www.passpic.com. you send them the digital photo (or hard copy) and they crop it to the correct size. It's only about £1.50 for 6.

merryberry · 07/09/2005 15:01

woo-hoo, passport office accpeted the pic today.
thank gawd. trying to pin down my barrister mate is like trying to pin a wave uppon the sand.

as julia andrews said. thanks for your encouragment re: their laxity...xx

Tip from the NZ Embassy for anyone who needs to do baby passport photos - lie the baby on the ground on a blanket that's the right background colour, and get the person taking the photo to stand over them. Much easier than trying to hold them up for the camera, apparently... Ours will only be a few days old when we do it, as have to get citizenship and passport sorted before we fly 8 weeks later - it's going to be a bit of a mission

merryberry · 08/09/2005 09:25

yes, we did ds' lying on the bed's white sheet...which he thought a huge and exciting game. so loads of character shots and very few nice still ones!! good luck with yours, xx
