We have got as far as the Eiffel Tower Blush

We're too grown up. I want to sit in pavement cafes and drink coffee and beer and then to go to some restaurant and eat fantastic food. 6 yr olds have different needs. Help.

Musay D'Orsay? I like the spaciousness of it.

Hot chocolate at Angelina's? Best one ever anywhere Grin

MollieO · 16/09/2010 21:38

Boat trip.

Notre Dame Cathedral (great gargoyles).

UnePrune · 16/09/2010 21:51

Oh yes a bateau-mouche!

Where is a good toy shop? He wants to spend his holiday money.

Musee d'Orsay. I can speak French, not!

Also Musee de l'Orangerie - lovely gallery with circular room dedicated to Monet's water lillies - the canvases were painted especially for the room they are in.

No idea about toy shops, hopefully Bonsoir will see this thread and advise.

Notre Dame is my favourite. I loved the place which is the only thing I loved about Paris!

There are many things for children to do in Paris.People here have given you some good suggestions so far, but if you want in depth replies, try posting on the Trip Advisor Paris forum. This question is asked quite often there. The Paris Destination Experts and other regular Paris forum posters will give you some more ideas.
The HOHO buses are a fun way to see the city, as you can sit on the open top deck, and get on/ off at the various stops to see sights. Also the HOHO Batobus, which does the same thing but on the river.
If your 6 yr old is interested in Ancient Egypt - mummies, sarcophagi, artefacts etc, there is a very good collection in the Louvre, and worth seeing the Mona Lisa and Venus De Milo at the same time.
Many famous works of art from the Musee D'Orsay are on tour abroad at the moment, whilst they do renovations in the museum.
You can buy tickets for the Eiffel Tower online now, to save a long queue.Make sure you select 2nd floor or the summit. We bought 10am tickets, and went straight up.You can also book behind the scenes tours of the Tower on this site.
We walked down through the construction framework from the 2nd floor to save queueing for the lift, and this was interesting.

There is an underground attraction called the Catacombs. This may appeal to your 6 yr old if they like ghoulish things. You walk through tunnels with skulls and skeletons stacked and arranged decoratively along the walls. These skeletons are from old cemetaries in Paris, that were dug up for the construction of new districts.( Metro station Denfert- Rochereau. Near the Lion Statue, look for a green hut- this is the entrance. Open Tues- Fri 10am-5pm.
The Jardin De Tuileries and Luxembourg Gardens may appeal. I think the most interesting view is from the Arc De Triomphe, watching all the traffic going round, and down the avenues branching out from it.
Notre Dame Towers are interesting, but a long climb. You get a close look at the Chimera ( gargoyles)and the bell.Long queues, which you cannot bypass with a Museum Pass, so recommend arriving by 9.30am for opening at 10am.
If you have never been, Disneyland Paris is 40 mins away on the RER line A4 train to Marne La Vallee Chessy. The station is inside the resort, just a few minutes walk to both parks.Definitely worth it for a special day out.

I'm going to Paris for the day on 2nd Oct, with two 11yo and a 13yo. Eiffel Tower is on our must do list, I think a boat trips sounds good too. Can you buy a travelcard equivalent for public transport?

5Foot5 · 19/09/2010 17:08

We took our 5 yo - but that was 10 years ago!! 3 days at Disneyland and 4 days in Paris

We had quite a useful book called "Take the Kids - Paris and Disneyland" published by Cadogan.

I think we most of what we did has already been mentioned - Notre Dame, Eiffel Tower, Bateau Mouche, Musee d'Orsay.Jardin du Luxembourg.

We particularly enjoyed eating out with her on the Left Bank. We found if we went early evening the restaurant were keen to give is a good table as I think it made them look family friendly, all the ones we went to were very good with children.

The other thing we have found in Paris is that it is almost a given that you will get your pocket picked if you travel on the metro! On a crowded station with a small child I think you become a very obvious target. We were very expertly turned over and didn't realise we had both had our wallets stolen until we were sitting in a restaurant having ordered lunch and already started on our drinks! Aagh- but that is a whole different story.

Anyway have a nice time and be very vigilant if you use the metro.

boat trip on the seine - you can see all the wonderful architecture, feels very magical when it's getting dark with all the twinkly lights etc. Bateux Mouche is excellent

Just about every city will have its share of pickpockets and scammers, so just be very careful, especially around train stations and tourist areas. Ignore anyone who comes up to you and asks if you are English. You can read about the different tourist scams that go on in Paris on the Trip Advisor Paris forum.
I would always recommend buying advance tickets for the E.Tower. Even having these, and going to the lifts at 10am, it was still 12 noon before we got back down to the ground again. You catch one lift to the 1st or 2nd floor, then another to the summit. Then you have to queue for lifts back down again. We decided to walk down from the 2nd floor, through the construction, which was more interesting than being crammed into a lift.
In August, there were already long queues for Tower tickets at 09.30.when we arrived. You can buy tickets to walk up from a different ticket booth which will have shorter queue, but only to the 2nd floor. You cannot walk to the summit as this is the longest part. Sunset is a very popular time, as people like to go up before it gets dark, then be on the Tower for the twinkle on the hour. You get beautiful sunset views if it has been a sunny day.

Regarding transport tickets, a Mobilis ticket covers trains, buses and Metro within different zones. A Paris Visite Travel Card does the same, but also gives discount to some museums and attractions. This card may not be the best value for young people though, as anyone with a EU passport under the age of 24 gets free admission to many places in Paris.

Figgygirl · 22/09/2010 18:18

Regarding the boat trips - it rather depends on where you catch it from, as the different boat companies go from different quays, in different parts of Paris. Some have an automated recorded commentary with hand held speaker phones ( choose your language) some have a general recorded commentary in different languages via loudspeakers, and some have a live commentary in different languages from a Tour Guide on board. Many people on the Paris Forum prefer the Vedettes de Pont Neuf boats, which are smaller than Bateaux Mouches or Bateaux Parisiens, and leave from the quay near Notre Dame. You can buy advance tickets online to save money - you don't have to specify a boat time.
It depends on where you are when you want to do your trip really. Some people time their evening river trip so that they arrive at the E.Tower on the hour, and see it twinkle.
The HOHO Batobus boats do not have any commentary, as they are not tour boats, although you can stay on as long as you like and do a round trip if you wish, instead of getting off at various stops. This would take quite a long time though!

Figgygirl · 22/09/2010 18:22

The TA Paris Fporum people can tell you all the different transport ticket types, how much they currently cost, and which they would advise you to use.

walk up the Eiffel (at least to the first level). One of our proudest moment was hubs' dd telling a pool guard that she had climbed the Eiffel when she was told to be careful about going to the top of the waterslide Grin.
