Whereabouts in the Algarve - there's a big difference between east and west..?

I wouldnt go tot the algarve again if you paid me.
One of the most dirty, scummy, rough places I have ever been.
Everywhere we went (and we went from Lagos to Villamoura) there were beggars, street beggars, beggars in restaurants, grafitti everywhere.
Fucking hovel Id rather go to Essex for a week!

I prefer spain have just come back from a beggar free/grafitti free holiday heaven

We love Cala D'Or in Majorca which is a lovely resort with lots of restaurants and a nice marina.
Also Cala N Bosch in Menorca is great, we've been twice and its a family friendly resort without being the 'chav holiday hell' thing you mention like Holiday Villages type of thing.
This summer we went to Sa Coma in Majorca but even though our hotel was lovely the resort wasnt up to much. Ive heard Puerto Poolensa is nice, thats where Im looking for next year

I would really avoid the Algarve, I wouldnt go back even if I won a free holiday it was grim and a total waste of money.

I wouldn't go to Algarve again either. We were near Albufeira and while the beaches were gorgeous, the area was not.

Lots of abandoned building sites, graffitti and crappy new villas as far as the eye could see. English breakfasts and UTD matches in all the eateries.

And to top it all off we were burgled whilst we slept in our (otherwise lovely) villa. Despite there being 8 foot security fences, shutters etc.

ugh.

Tavira in Algarve is beautiful. Clean and none of the problems described above.

Tavira is a lovely town.
As are many places west of Lagos.

That's where we're planning on going next May - or Montegordo.

We went to the Porto Bay Falesia in Olhos d'Agua this summer. Lovely hotel, two beaches (but one down lots of steps), town a little scruffy but some very nice restaurants and friendly staff especially towards children (dds are 10,9 and 6). I would, however, second the recommendation for Puerto Pollensa, it's lovely.

I also love Majorca - have been to Cala D'or twice.

Has anyone stayed in a nice hotel/apartment complex in or near Porta Pollensa? Or has anyone been to Cala Mura?

My sister had a lovely stay at Monte da Quinta in the Algarve - very classy, good for families and good value compared to the Sheraton. Here's a link
