Thomson baggage allowance... 23kg max

Anyone have any experience of how Thomson flights deal with their single baggage allowance?
2 adults, a 4yo and under 2yo so we get 3x20kg or 60kg total allowance.
I read the small print on my booking reference, and it says "The maximum limit for each individual piece of luggage is 23 kg. Any item weighing more than this at the time of check in will need to be repacked."

We have 2 cases for the 4 of us, so if we have 2x25kg, we're under the total 60kg allowance but would they really make us buy another suitcase to repack and spread this out? Seems very silly to add the bulk and additional weight of a suitcase...

Anyone had experience of Thomson check-in desks and this policy?

We had to unpack 3kg out of our suitcase weighing 26kg at the BA check-in at Gatwick last month. Yes, that was 26kg between DH and I. Didn't matter. Computer said NO (its all to do with maximum weights baggage handlers are allowed to lift, someone told me). Don't risk it.

I thought the maximum the baggage handlers could lift was 32 kg? Or does it vary airline to airline? Confused

Don't know. But BA stuck rigidly to the 23kg rule a month ago.

Each person has the 20kg allowance (apart from the baby). You're not allowed to share it so repack into three cases. It'll just be embarrassing for your at checkin otherwise.

Just arrived home from a Thomson holiday 20kg max for each person. We were a family of four only needed two large cases both weighed before we left and they under the limit. Just booked for next year and well be taking a case each next year. This is because our two hard cases got smashed up like egg shells and had to be strink wrapped for the home bound journey costing us 24euro.Thomson would not replace them we are claiming it back though.

We had 15kg each for four of us and managed to get it all into two cases, one weighing 19kg and the other weighing 15!

They deffo check and won't allow over 23 but you can pool up to 23.

oh god, just reading this whilst waiting for taxi to take me to the airport for a BA flights. DH has weighed our bags a few times and fingers crossed we will be ok.
We are allowed 4 x 23k but I think you can have up to 30k per bag but have to pay a 'heavy baggage' charge of around 30 pounds.
To be on the safe side we've paid an extra 32 online to take an extra bag but may have to do the 'put your foot under the edge of the suitcase when they are weighing it trick' at the airport!

GeekOfTheWeek · 09/09/2010 19:31

It used to be 30kg per case but has been reduced to 23kg per case for the health and safety of the baggage handlers.

Glad I took the advice here (on the other thread) and took an extra suitcase as lots of people were being forced to repack. Meant we could take a little bit more stuff so all good (except the extra airline fuel burned to carry it....)

Beware those who have paid extra for additional baggage allowance as the 23KG per bag still applies......
