Has anyone been to New England for Christmas?

My FIL has very kindly offered to take us all to New England for Christmas and New Year. He used to live there many moons ago and fancies a trip down memory lane. Most of us ski so we were thinking of Vermont, maybe Killington or Stowe. I'm worried about the temperatures though, I've heard it is freezing there that time of year. One of my boys is only 14 months old and I don't think he could cope with that extreme temperature. Does anyone have any experiences of Vermont at Christmas?

I used to live in ONTARIO, canada, and yes it is very very cold.

BUT the clothes there are very warm, so get or hire him an all-in-one coat, hat gloves and boots and he ill have a deffo brill time.

It is a different kind of cold to here it is a dry cold.

Sunshine and thick snow

NOT damp cold IYSWIM

The only thing I hated was driving in FREEZING RAIN, falls as rain but when it touches ground or car it is ice

Sure he will have a deffo brill time

If any of them love trains go up Mount Washington on the train

bosscat · 31/08/2005 15:53

yeah they both worship the tracks that trains ride on! I read somewhere that you shouldn't take an under 2 year old to extremely cold places, do you think that's true or have I imagined it? I took him last new year but to the Alps so it wasn't that cold. Also, is it snow sure that time of year? I've looked at the altitude and it seems really low ...

Are you going from UK?

When we went last, DS was 6 years and we went from NAVADA desert in the morning to thick snow in Toronto in the afternoon

Am sure he will be fine, hire his coats etc.

Can't understand why it would be a problem, going from australia summer to it may do

But it is a lovely refreshing cold

Sure it will be snowy

The Americans go skiing there

RTKangaMummy · 31/08/2005 16:09

we stayed in lovely hotel near the mountains

RTKangaMummy · 31/08/2005 16:19

the hotel we stayed in is called CRANMORE MT. LODGE

RTKangaMummy · 31/08/2005 16:24

here is the train

here is the hotel if you have loads of money

RTKangaMummy · 31/08/2005 16:27

you can ski straight out of hotel

bosscat · 31/08/2005 18:07

that's amazing, looks great I hadn't even heard of this place. I'll do a bit of research on it. The reason I asked about snow was I found a US website which said it was only a 50/50 chance of snow on intermediate runs at xmas

There is a great outlet shopping centre with loads of outlets down the road.

Like Ralph Lauren. Timberland, and loads loads more.

Got loads of stuff for DS and DH

We drove there from BOSTON,

I've been to Killington and Stowe. Hate skiing, but lovely quaint place and I didn't think that cold really. It's very, very pretty - all picket fences and big dinners. They have a cinema where you can take cocktails in. That was my favourite bit, I think

Watch out though, all the hotels do 'warm cider' after skiing but there is NO ALCOHOL in it , well, it was v disappointing for me, anyway. No wonder they all look so radiantly healthy in New England.

expatkat · 31/08/2005 20:20

I lived in that area with a 12 month old (we were there til she was 18 months) who was used to English climes. You just have to really bundle you ds's up, but they'll be OK. Everything indoors is massively heated anyway, unlike in the UK, where IMO one always feels a little chilled even when the heating is on. Well, I'm envious--would love to be there over xmas. I think it'd be great.

Went to Killington when I was about 10don't know if any of your boys is that oldand it was a lovely experience I'll always remember.

RTKangaMummy · 31/08/2005 20:34

Is he 14 months now or will be 14 months at christmas?

bosscat · 31/08/2005 21:08

He's 14 months now so will be 18 then. I'm wary because I took ds1 when he was 1 and 2 then we went last year with ds1 aged 3 and baby aged 5 months. all these vacations were disasters! I'm with Aloha, I don't love ski-ing, I like all the other bits which go with it, shopping, eating, drinking, the pretty scenery, a few blue runs and then I'm done! But I just found out in this Bretton Woods place they have the hotel featured in that film 'the shining'! How spectaculary spooky would that be?

ps. those vacations were disasters because dh bogged off with my Dad and his brother leaving me and my Mum to do all childcare. Not fun, I vowed next time childcare must be available!
