Baby in a helicopter

well here's a Q I never thought I'd be asking...the holiday we want involves a helicopter transfer. I've never been in one either, and the travel agent is a bit stymied at present.

Can I take a 11 week old baby in a chopper? Will they need ear protection? Any experience/knowledge out there for me?

Many thanks, xx

No idea, would thought it would be very noisy, the usual feed at take off may help to avoid the pain caused in the ears due to pressure changes. Don't know really, have you though of ringing them and ask about it? you don't even need to ring the actual place, perhaps the service of paramedic helicopters can provide that kind of info?

tissy · 31/08/2005 12:14

we went on a helicopter from Malta to Gozo before dd was born, and it was just like a small aeroplane inside. Don't remember it being too noisy, and the transfer only took about 10 mins. No idea where you'd find out about ear protection, though...Civil Aviation Authority, the Airline running the flight?

tissy · 31/08/2005 12:15

helicopters don't go high enough for pressure changes!

merryberry · 31/08/2005 12:19

hey Tissy that is the trip we're making! where did you stay in Gozo? We are looking at Ta Cenc in Sannat.

We stayed at Ta Cenc...it was WONDERFUL!

tissy · 31/08/2005 12:21

you're not going with Headwater by any chance, are you?

Chandra · 31/08/2005 12:21

No pressure changes? I get my ears popping wven in the road where mountains are involved), so I suspected it would be the same if going up to that height via chopper.

tissy · 31/08/2005 12:23

my ears are dreadful on planes (due to too much scuba diving in my youth) and I had no problems at all in the helicopter. Depends on the ears in question, I suppose!

merryberry · 31/08/2005 12:25

laugh no, with um, luxury escapes. would you recommend headwater then?

The only loud, scary bit is getting on the helicopter, once on it's not that loud, I'm sure it'll be fine. Just have baby wrapped in a blanket in your arms or a sling, have a little hat over his head and ears.

Headwater run "activity" holidays- basically walking/ cycling/ canoeing etc. We walked around Gozo (a small place so not too difficult). Headwater supply the maps and suggest routes. There was walk planned for every day we were there, but obviously you can choose to veg out by the pool if you want to!

We went to Gozo about 4 years ago, and really loved Ta Cenc. Would definitely go back when we can palm off dd on the grand parents! The food was lovely, the people lovely, the climate lovely (I think we went in April and i got badly burned because the hazy sun didn't seem hot enough ). The scenery and beaches are great, the little buses are remeniscent of Britain in the 40s and 50s (so I hear!).

There are some funny little museums to see, and the Basilica of Ta Pinu is a must- they have a huge collection of objects left behind as offerings (to Mary, I think), in thanks for miracles worked- strangely, they have at least 1 false leg, but they don't tell you whether the owner was given a new leg after praying there!

We went over to Malta for a day or so (hired a car- beware Maltese drivers- they're lethal!). I remember sitting in a grogeous harbour of an evening eating seafood that had literally been caught a few minutes before...

Hmm, getting all bleary-eyed thinking about it.

In the hotel bar try the local liqueur- can't remember its name, but it's pink, and I think cactuses are one of the ingredients.

Enjoy yourselves!

Well I've just come back having learnt its all booked: and that's a very enticing message to read Tissy, thank you and thank allyou others too. We've booked the helicopter flight - tha CAA hadn't a clue, bless their febrile Southampton Row heads...but the chopper owners in Malta do it a lot apparently, so off we go.

Am now off to look at picsof the place again. SOOO excited

bye for now, xx

you lucky thing!

Gozo is wonderful. We stayed at San Lawrenz when I was expecting ds1. It was my last holiday pre-kids and I loved it! Spent the week by the pool reading trashy novels and relaxing. Can't believe it's 4 years ago now!

Enjoy.

PS The helicopter transfer was great too!
